80's hot hatch

I'm thinking about getting a hot hatch. I'm craving a back to basics car for the weekend. So far I've been looking at mk1 golf gti's (don't like the looks of the mk2) and 205gti's. I don't want to spend more than £2000.
1st question; for my budget, which car represents the best value for money. (there seems to be a few more 205's about)
what else should i consider?
Is £2k a realistic budget for a runner, I expect to spend a fair bit of time and money on maintenance but I don't want a project.
I appreciate any help.

I'm not convinced any 80's hatchback wont end up being a "project" and cost a packet to get right. I had a 3 yr old 205 1.6 GTI in my youth (18 years ago) and in the 2 years I owned it alreay stuff was falling off and failing and the arches/doors/sunroof area were starting to bubble.
I'd be more tempted to go for something from the 90's like this personally, but good luck.

Keep it original and you'll still have loads of fun and get admiring glances from PH'ers.
Don't dismiss the 1.6 205 gti. Lots of people prefer it to the 1.9.
I agree they are a nice car. They handle brilliantly but to me they feel a bit frail & simply don't have the grunt of a 16v GTE.
A Corrado VR6 for around £2k will most likely be a total mare unless you're extremely lucky. Either avoid totally, buy a G60 or stretch your budget a bit would be my advice.

Between the 1.9 205 GTI and the MK2 16v its a tough call and you really need to spend a bit of time with both. I chose golfs, but have experienced 1.4, 1.6, 1.9 and MI16 powered 205s and they are a hell of a lot of fun and deserve the praise they get.
As big a cliche that it is I rather the golf handling, looks,interior and build quality. Consider how many 200k golfs there are and how many have survived compared with 205.

Lovely motor though. I've only ever driven a 1.6 before, which was my mates, and I absolutely fell in love with it. So much fun!
How about a 309 GTI?
Slightly more practical, and are quite nice. Mum had one, she said it was fun to drive, she's never been much of a car nut but she had all the 80s hatches at one point, including a couple of golfs, and thought that was the nicest out of the lot.
Until she got a more modern car obviously, and became a 50 year old eco warrior.
