HELP: Flashing Oil Light
Discussion
Daaa the light it mocks me. this problem has been the bane in my life now for about 3 weeks.
i will set the scene. my daily drive to work. about 20 miles each way ( i know thats a whole different issue) which takes me through huddersfield town centre, and the inevitable rush hour traffic jams.
all is well with the world until this moment. then the oil temperature raises above 90 degrees and the lights starts to flash. the car seems to be running fine, no rough idle or knocking, engine temp doesnt increase. and then with any little revs the light goes off.
currently solutions that i have tried are. new oil, new oil filter, new oil pressure sensor and finally a new oil pump.
currently nothing has worked and am now out of ideas and at the end of my wick i kneel down infront of the Pistonheads community and ask please can someone shed light on this.
my last thoughts are that it is a faulty earth, but i am yet to figure out why this would only happen above a certain temp.
please im starting to think that the light will start responding 'nevermore' to any of my fixes.

So you think the light is flashing because of high oil temperature....( doubftul ) and you change everything except the oil temperature switch ?i will set the scene. my daily drive to work. about 20 miles each way ( i know thats a whole different issue) which takes me through huddersfield town centre, and the inevitable rush hour traffic jams.

I think you need to find out what the light is actually flashing for.
90deg is not hot for oil to be of concern, so hard to imagine any manufacturer fitting a warning light for that, at that temperature.
sorry no i dont believe that anything is wrong with the temperature sensor. both the oil and the engine temperature are normal whilst this annoyance occurs.
the relevance of mentioning the temperature was that this just occurs when it gets to around 90 degrees, not before.
and with regards to trying to find out what is causing it, i am trying my hardest to do this. this blinking light whilst sat in traffic on my way home from work is starting to drive me insane whilst it thwarting my attempts to stop it is increasing these tendencies.
although saying all this have been chatting with some old guru's at work and am going to perform an experiment with 20w50 oil to see whether it is just the fact that the engine is generally worn through old age and its the oil just seeping out under no load.

ah my bad. ye its a 1998 mk3 Golf Gti 2.0lt 8v engine code AGG
and this one has the trip computer with the oil temp on it, engine has done around 120,000 miles and have been using 10w40 throughout the 5000 miles i have been doing in it.
from my reading and from other forums i believe that the mk3 was simple and the oil light just meant the oil light, though i will have a read through the manual tonight just to make sure i havent made a rookie mistake.

Very few cars have oil temperature warning lights or gauges, modern oils are good up to 120 degs continous and 130 degs intermitant. So the light will be oil level or oil pressure warning, assuming you have checked the level and it is ok, that only leaves oil pressure.
The light only coming on when the engine is warm and goes out if a few revs are applied, thus increasing oil pump speed and pressure, are both consistant with low oil pressure.
If you have changed the oil, filter, pump and pressure switch, then I am afriad that only leaves one thing. Worn main bearings. Try an oil change to a slightly thicker oil, 20/50 and see what happens.

OR
a partially blocked inlet strainer on the pump due to the black sludge of death.
BUT
probably main bearing wear........
What does the car tick over at? If less than 850rpm you could try increasing tickover rpm.
Go slightly thicker on the oil preferably 10/50 if you can get it. Get an oil pressure gauge, temporary or permanent. I assume you have replaced the oil pressure sender with the right part......
When you say flashing again I assume you mean an irregular, occasional flash. NOT a regular sequence. If a regular sequence some VAG had oil condition sensors which could go loopy.
I still think it is the former though with the mileage.

ye i begrudgingly came to this conclusion talking to work mates this morning, thicker oil is the order of the day this weekend and if this then stops the light mocking me with its blinking worn bearings would most likely be the problem. though on the brighter side this now gives me the excuse to start looking at cars to purchase
