What is it anyway, is it gas powered or something else?

If gas I thought there were restrictions about carrying gas containers by air.

Looked like a type of miner's safety lamp to me when they showed it on the news. A blazing Olympic Torch would certainly make life on the flight more interesting though!

The Met are supplying the officers running alongside the torch bearers for the whole relay. I think they're also responsible for sorting out the torches when it is carried in a convoy. Hence the firefighting training.

Given the state of some BiB you see on patrol, I hope they applied a fitness bar to the selection!
