Just got back from a 30 mile run out and have noticed spots of clean oil on underneath of bonnet and top of fuel rail/ front rad cover panel. Looks like its from passenger inside the V around front inlet area. Just had 12k service. Could it be poorly sealed/loose cam cover with the leak spraying up off alternator?
Thoughts appreciated, I'll be dropping her back to garage to get their verdict next week but just would like some ideas.
Gonna let oil settle and check levels ok, she ran beautifully though! On my birthday too, I spoke too soon!!!

The problem certainly seems to have occurred after the service so maybe it's not the oil seal, as that would be unlikely to fail so suddenly?
Since Andy and Ridds have both mentioned the cam covers and they have been removed and refitted it does seem too much of a coincidence. It certainly wouldn't be the first time a fault has been caused after work, the amount of stuff I have had to rectify after work is crazy and why I will do all minor bits myselfe now. Yes there are credible and trusted places that know the cars inside out, but there are also places where it's just another car to turn round.

My was losing last year a litre every 300 miles due to the cam cover having a bad seal the V was full of oil when i pulled it apart. re-sealed them and it has used 300 ml of oil in 1000 miles now I would run your hand along the edge of the cover to see if the oil is coming out of them.
Cam cover looks the most likely having had a good look. Interesting about the cracking occurring so I'll get that checked too. The garage are going to take it back in for a look next week, and do the mend if associated with the 12k service. Im pretty good with spanners and I do have to agree with your thought Nick, it's simpler to DIY.
Thanks for all your advising I will let you know the outcome.

Update on this thread:
The leak has got slowly worse and having been back to the garage the mechanic is fairly certain it is the alternator drive oil seal, and not due to a mishap from the service. Has anyone on here had to replace one of these, and if so is the seal difficult to pull out? Is there a 'right' method for pulling out an oil seal?
I can confidently remove the fuel rail, alternator and other gubbins that are in the way, but due to the awkward position of the seal, I know it will not be a walk in the park. Think I might as well get the water temp gauge done while doing all this too, the only benefit of doing this in the summer is the long warm evenings!

Yes its strange the belt looks dry but then its whizzing round and spraying oil up the bonnet I guess it keeps "clean". I reckon I'm going to have to get it all apart to clean it up anyway but I'm reluctant to go to the trouble of trying to remove the seal if the leak is one of the cam covers. Do you think a cam cover can leak that much in a 15 mile journey?
