just got a Cayman s, and they told me there was a tracker on the car, yearly cost is £220, insurance drops by £85. Worth it? Do these cars get nicked?

Do you want it back if it gets nicked?

I have the same with my classic Porsche. The insurance company advised me to fit an approved tracker. On weighing up the odds I fitted a non-approved tracker so I can find the car but there are not nasty renewal premiums.

A proper susbscribed tracker will only benefit the insurance company. On the event of theft, the police and the insurance company will not tell you where you vehicle is until it suits them to do so. In my friends case, his vehicle was stolen by a professional car ringing group, and even though the police knew where it was, they refused to tell him until it had been cut up and disassembled for spares. Then they had the evidence they needed to prove the organisation. He got a new car, but obviously his insurance premium went up considerably more than if he had recovered his car.

On that basis alone I will not use a subscription tracker.

Tracker offer a 'lifetime' subscription too, equal to about 2-3 year's annual subscription, so if you're planning on keeping it a while then go for that.

However, as the previous poster has said, it's really you paying to protect the insurance company from a total loss theft claim.

I had to have one when I first got my Z4 due to my Liverpool postcode, but I've since found other insurers who are cheaper and don't ask for a tracker.

You're lucky. My insurance goes up if I add a tracker to my policy or tentative quotes with EUI!

For my Cayman S Privilege were 400 quid cheaper than all of the rest but insist on a tracker. So, I said to myself that if I get a car with one already fitted I will go with them, if not then one of the more expensive ones.

I have a 'Tracker' and its £149 per year. Also, they allow you to make it up to a lifetime subscription the following year by just paying the difference.
