They have nothing on the new tarmac on Box Hill! hehe

I had my first ride up there this morning. My previous best was a particularly miserable 12 minutes 40 seconds, at an average of 7.3mph. This morning I have frustratingly just discovered was 2 seconds short of cutting 2 minutes off that, with the average going up to 8.7mph.

I'd like to think at least part of that was me working harder, rather than just the tarmac being smoother, but either way, it still jumped me almost 200 places up the Strava rankings, from a dreadful 1,630th out of 1,678 ( paperbag ) to 1,457th. hehe

This initially felt somewhat depressing, but I've decided today should be a glass half full sort of day, so I am officially declaring that that's not too bad a speed in which to drag 117kgs of rider up that slope, and it's certainly a lot better than all the millions of lazy fkers who don't even try! hehe

Whatever way you look at it, it's nice to know we really have got a little bit of lovely, smooth Olympic legacy! hehe

I have not hit the hill yet but hope to do it in the next couple of weeks, just need to find a Sat/Sun where I have a long enough slot between Dad's taxi duties........

Next stop is position 1,337. I need to get under 10 minutes for that. Then I'll see what I need for 1,200! hehe

Having spent many of my night's as a young biker at Boxhill, many decades ago I just wondered what your exact route is?

Is it the turn off near the car park at the bottom then the cafe at the top for the finish?

We used to race up there on our motorcycles back in the times when Ryka's was just a caravan. The speed bumps put a stop to that.

Have they got rid of the bumps as well?

The speed bumps have been removed, however I can see them coming back very soon since the Zig Zag seems to have turned into Tokyo Drift after dark.

That's the route, yes. My understanding is that the speed bumps will be going back in after the Olympics.

It would be nice to think they'd put in something which could be avoided by cyclists on the way up, but I suspect they'll be full width again.

If improving 2 minutes only takes you up 200 places, what on earth is the P1 for that segment?!

(For what it's worth, my average over anything hillier than a speed bump is about 4.9mph, so you can rest easy in the knowledge that I'd be propping up that table!)

Box Hill is a well known and popular climb with club riders so it's not surprising that the segment is rather competitive. This will only have been emphasised by it being on the Olympic route.
