Tightening exhaust

Just started the car, first time for 4 years
The exhaust is blowing at the joint of the header to the Y piece. I pulled it together with a ratchet strap, but I can see on on side that the clamp is done up more than on the other side. The clamp nut feels tight and I don't want to break the clamp. What is the best way to tighten it. Or do I need to put some exhaust sealer in the joint first?
Also I had the headers and y piece "cermachromed" so when I started it, the exhaust smoked, is that what is expected ?. Because it was blowing I have not run the engine for more than 30 seconds so far.
