Just saw an astonishing car..Gobsmacked at the work

On Saturday mornings, I habitually get together with a bunch of (mainly ) fellow Porsche enthusiasts for a coffee. You never know what will turn up from Porsche and many other marques. (We recently had a VW Microbus with a 911 turbo engine and four Recaros
)
This morning, an immaculate Lambo Diablo SV showed up.
Or so I thought.
It turned out that its creator, a schoolteacher, had built it from scratch in his workshop. The frame is a replica of the original which he built by hand, and the measurements are taken from an actual car. It took six years to do. Power is from a V12 BMW engine, with an Audi transmission. Fit and finish are impeccable . He even laid his own carbon fibre, and many parts were built from scratch, such as the exhaust. Interior is not quite finished, ( steering wheel for example). The thing sounds magnificent.
Like most people I have often seen abominations like awful "Ferraris" which are rebodied MR2s and so on. This one simply floored me. A labour of love.

I think it looks fantastic. I've never seen an original so can't compare, but it looks great and I love the interior.
I don't know though... No matter how much work has gone in to it it's still just a replica. Admittedly a very good one and far better than the usual MR2 conversions. I just think if your going to do that much work wouldn't it be more special to come up with something original?

I can respect the fact that the builder is obviously a half way talented guy, and i do appreiate that if it is his dream car, well he will be over the moon after the time and cash sunk into the project.

Some of the replica Ferraris, and indeed the Aston, have a huge tag on them- surely you would be better off going and getting a genuine car for the same cash- how urgent is your need to draw attention to yourself by ploughing a load of cash into a replica?? To me it just not rational to spend that much cash on a pretend car, when you could have something genuine from a similar stable for the same price.

I don't get it. Surely the reason you lust after a lamborghini/ferrari/whatever is because of the performance it offers. This thing might look the same, but it will be about 200bhp down compared to a real one! I doubt it will handle or corner as well either, so you just end up with a pretend car that has absorbed so much money and time that you could have bought a real one. Or, if you enjoy doing the work, restored a rusty old classic car. Either way, you would be left with something that could be sold on, making the total cost much lower than creating a replica.
The only exception is replicas of cars with really basic technology, like cobras or the Caterham 7 clones. An original cobra was awesome because it joined a simple chassis to a massive engine, a recipe easily recreated in a shed. An original Diablo was awesome for a multitude of reasons, none of which are captured here.
