Finding the right spec...

I've been looking for a car for over 2 months now and the right one is just not out there. I sometimes get near but one thing I really want is missing.
Are my expectations too high?
Should I sacrifice one or two things to get the car I'd nearly like or keep looking?
I'm not in too much of a rush but I'd rather not still be looking in 6 months.
Anyone else waited a long time for the right spec?

It depends what your spec requirements are.
If they're likely to be what other people would have chosen when buying new, then yes, hold out for what you want. If you're thinking you absolutely must have the peach leather with purple headlining, then maybe not.
Most cars I've bought, I've had a 'must have' spec list and a 'would like' spec list. Makes it easier to filter out if you can be a little less choosy.

If it's a £2k banger, then it's probably not worth waiting. However, if you're looking at spending £100,000 on something you want to keep for life, then I'd be prepared to wait a long while! The type of car matters to- if it's a fun weekend car, then the same applies about waiting until the right one comes along- obviously, if it's for day to day use and you've been walking to work in the rain for the last 2months while looking for the right car then I'd say it was probably time to compromise!

My current lease-car was an introduction model, so all of them were already made, this meant i could get a good price on a car with some nice kit, but had limited choice in terms of color/options. In the end i went for a car with no added options (would have liked park sensors, but for the rest it is complete enough), with added roof-rails, just to get this version in my favorite color.
Would i have liked park sensors? yes. Am i fussed about not having them? No, i manage without just fine, and the rest of the car is about as good as it could be within the company restraints.
Just prioritise your demands, make a list of Must haves, should haves, and nice to haves, and weigh each caragainst that list.
