Hi,

Basically I've been offered a job at LandRover, very low basic + commision. I have no experience of car sales but I do have sales experience. I absolutely love LandRovers/Rangerovers, im car mad and have always wanted to work in a dealership (from the age of about 5!!!)

Ive been made redundant from my finance job and am a bit confused as I've also been offered another boring finance job that pays a basic of 33k plus bonus. So it's stability and an ok wage Vs the unknown but doing something I am really passionate about. I'm actually excited at the prospect of selling cars!

My worry is the reality of the job may not be what I imagine and the stress and pressure to sell might be too much? I have also been told you need a thick skin to work in car sales as its a very macho environment? I'm pretty confident and it should be fine but just wondering what a dealership environment is like? Also Is it possible to earn a decent wage consistently selling cars?

Think I want the LandRover job! Any advice from salesmen/women would be much appreciated.

Thanks

You'll become a prick with no soul.

Unless you already in are, in which case it's your dream job.

Personally I'd take the finance job.

all depends on your personal circumstances and your financial commitments

stability...do you need it?

fixed income....do you depend on it?

Haha hope that's not the case! Don't fancy loosing my soul!

I don't need a fixed income right now and I can afford to take a pay cut as i have no commitments so I guess this is the best time to try it. Could be the best thing I ever do or might be a bad move. It's a hard call as I really want the car job but my head is saying be sensible.

Are you CIMA/ACCA certified? might help make the decision...

then go for it, give yourself a pre set time to evaluate the situation.

finance jobs are always plenty, more so if you have a good history.

dream jobs, are far less ready.

do it now when you have the freedom of little commitments
you will only wonder for the rest of your life "what if i had"

Sadly that will mean nothing. Salesmen don't have any brand loyalty or interest in the cars, they just want to convince X to buy Y.

They'll happily spend a year saying how Honda is the best possible choice, then move to Toyota or whatever, and give the same lines.
A genuine interest might help, but a saleman's main aim is to sell anything, and they'll throw any morals on the fire when they change jobs.

Done car sales briefly. Very little of it is actually about cars or selling cars. It's all about the paperwork, the finance and the add ons, the cars are just there to give something to sell the add ons for.

Also consider the lack of weekends, very tiresome.

Having said that, you're in the perfect position to give it a go. smile

How old are you OP?

When I was younger, maybe 10-18. I used to think I'd love to sell cars. But I'm yet to go into a dealership I actually like...
Non of them seem to know much at all about cars, it's all about the finance and add ons these days.
Coming from office hours, could you bring yourself to work weekends?

I guess a lot of it depends how career focused you are. I would think it's easier to progress in finance?

Out of interest, what's the ceiling for a salesman take-home (Inc commision.) £50k?
£35k for most?

Are there any car salesmen on here that actually like selling cars and not the "extras" that go with it? Maybe I'm not a typical buyer , I only buy the car (always s/h) and never any extras.
I often think it would be good to sell something I had an interest in. And in fact next week I'll find out if I'm being made redundant so may have to find a new career anyway.
So if sales is always about the extras and not the product then I could rule that out.

I work in finance..... (CIMA qualified etc....)

My advice would be to do it - if nothing else to see what the grass is like whilst you still can.

I've been doing this for 10 years and am now in fairly senior position at a global IT company. I earn a fairly big wedge to be fair but not a single day goes by where I don't wish I was doing something with cars..... Something I'm passionate about and could genuinely enjoy.

The problem when you get to my position is that although money isn't everything, it does buy you some very nice things - which now makes it almost impossible for me to switch into something new. Once your on the gravy train....

Finance isn't fun. Cars are. Give it a shot, you can always come back. I wish I had!

Take the finance job, earn a decent wage and spend the extra on car related stuff to keep you amused. Liking cars is one thing, but just plain selling them and the extras day in day out including weekends and bank holidays etc will soon test how much you like cars.

I recently just left car sales.
Firstly don't listen to people on here who say car salesmen don't need to know anything about cars. Product knowledge was one of the most important things to have. But you need to know the cars and all add ons backwards.

The guys who are making decent money will all have been there for years and have regular customers coming back to see them again and again. Its all about building relationships with your customers to keep them coming back. You will ony rip somebody off once.

Not all car salesmen are soulless but it does start to eat away at you sometimes. by the end I found myself doing things I would never have done when I sarted, in the end it was one of the reasons I left. There will be constant pressure on you to hit all targets and by the end I was given a script to use on the phone that was so pushy where we could never accept no for an answer I found myself saying things I was uncomfortable with.

It's interesting you say it's not about the cars it's purely about selling X to make Y, I hadn't really thought about it like that although surely it would help to be passionate and knowalagble about the product you were selling?

I'm not qualified and not at a senior level yet so I guess if I'm going to change it should be now rather than later, I'm 24 so feel like I need to do this soon! I was wondering what sort of long term prospects there are in car sales and how easy it is to progress to dealer principle etc? I was told 50k is acheivable but I'm not sure this is the norm?

Thanks

Can't speak as a car salesman, but years ago I got a job doing what was kind of my hobby at the time. At first I thought it would be my dream job, but found that it just meant I lost interest in my hobby. frown

First thing is ignore the salesman/dealer haters on here...most buy on price only, act like smart arses and get what they deserve smile

Landrover....About the best franchise to be in at the minute, so its a great start.

If you dont mind the long hours, weekend work then go for it....if its a decent group you should earn 50 grand if you are any good...quite easy to get into management positions if you have half a brain.

If your only want it because you like the idea of working with cars... Don't bother.

The job will be about pushing sales and trying to squeeze every penny you can out of the customer. Car knowledge doesn't really come into it. Esspecially when the average punter that walks into the show room won't give a toss anyway.

Being a dispatch rider ruined biking for me for a very long time.

Saying that I have always had a hankering to be a car salesman but it's always ruined for me every time I go into a dealership. I'd imagine it's all about your people skills, which I think I'm good at, but it appears to be a trait that is missing amongst most of the dealers I have dealt with.

The last guy I went to see was so cocky about his sales record that I have vowed never to go back there again, even if I see them selling the bargain of the century.

Personally I know that it would be hard for me to ever p155 someone off but maybe you lose that ability in the training.

Do sales people at big dealerships really earn GBP50k or is that just the exceptional ones? I always had it pegged as a GBP25-35k job for most.

I did it for six months when I was eighteen - a big VW/Audi dealership. Most of the people I worked with were wkers and job hoppers and the supply chain lost us a lot of sales. I don't mind working long hours but working every weekend is a ball ache unless you're single or your partner/mates do it also.
