Something interesting has cropped up on the Cumbria silly site, I think they just might be using a bit of non type approved kit.

Kustom Signals Prolaser I speedguns.....(of which I have one to play with )

I thought these were not approved for speed measurment in the UK, the Type II model is however.

Can anybody enlighten me please, as to the use & validity of non type approved weoponry?

Short and simple - if the device does not have Home Office Type Approval then it cannot be used operationally and any cases detected soley on the evidence of that device unenforceable.

If you have time to spare, have a read of Brunston's Bible at

www.tinyurl.com/me10

Road Policing Enforcement Technology Codes of Practice.

(unless broadband take some time to download)

Devices authorised at Appendix B but bear in mind last uupdate March 2003.

Cheers for that,

It would appear Cumbria have the use of a non type approved bit of kit, that has been used for speed measurment at least.

Now whether this is used for enforcement is another matter, as obviously it's a useful tool that can be used for range finding & speed surveys (for example at accident scenes etc)

I have asked the question though

I was fortunate enough to play with a Stalker LIDAR unit the other weekend. Astounding what the thing could actually measure the speed of. Spec of dust at 300 miles (well not quite but you get the idea). Vans at 2 miles was easy, as was oncoming motorcycles (no plate?!!). However, the most intersting was the fact that it was so easy to read a speed of 7MPH on my stationary silver VW golf by sweeping the laser across it. This is clearly incorrect and wouold be very easy to prove of course. Thing is, as there is no other was of corroborating a speed reading on a moving vehicle, how on earth do you know if the reading is correct?. 7MPH can be the difference between losing your licnese, job, house, etc or not.
At least the gatsos have the marking to go by.

I think he meant "Using the Kustom Prolaser, I was...", as in "I", me, not "1" number one.

You might be right there, in fact I'm sure you are but I'll ask that question. Only thats its name would be a Prolaser I or II.
