I've just bought a replacement engine (M3 evo) for my car, and as a pre-emptive measure I'm fitting new big-end shells and ARP bolts. While I'm there I thought I would inspect the main bearings and journals.

5 of them are 100% unmarked, but number 1 shows a discoloured stripe down the middle of the journal and corresponding marks on the bearings. It feels completely smooth to the touch.

So... do I need to take the crank out, polish it, fit new main bearings, etc? Or does this level of wear fall under "normal/healthy wear and tear" and can I happily ignore it?

(note, those oil are bubbles, not marks, at the top right of the journal)
