Got in my car today after not driving it for a few weeks. Pressed the clutch pedal and heard a bang/snapping sound.

I found the spring pictured rolling around the footwell, which has broken (there was a hook on the other end). The car still seems to drive fine with no real different feel from the clutch pedal (I haven't gone far with it though).

Question is, what is the spring for, and will I be OK to drive the car home (approx 10 miles). The car is a MKII Ford Focus.

Thanks for your help!

Had one pop out of the XC90.
Clutch felt the same afterwards ??
2 years later the spring is still sitting in the garage.
My first thought was that it connected to a switch to disconnect cruise. But no - dipping the clutch still stopped cruise control ??

Probably the return spring to ensure a good clutch release. Won't be an expensive or difficult part to replace, probably worth it I'd say - they're fitted for a reason. smile

Clutch pedal return spring. Common problem on the mkII Focus platform and a real bh to replace by all accounts.

My mkII Volvo S40 is on the same platform and I thought mine had gone, and looking where the spring is, I can see why it is such a bh to replace. Only really doable with taking the clutch pedal out really.

Clutch return spring as said. Count yourself lucky, I had one of those let go in my MGB and it ricoched off my be-shorted leg and hit me square in the plums.

So a part on the clutch pedal thats a bh to fit? Not like fords to do something like that, should have stuck to that much easier part to fit, the ratchet and pawl.
