Having hulking black Mission 774 floorstanders vaguely reminiscent of the obelisk from 2001 do not cut it in a small Victorian sitting room, so I am expected to replace them with something a little smaller..

Any recommendations ? I do not mind buying secondhand, £300ish, I have a 5.1 amp already so a 5.1 surround kit would be great. Movies/TV only. The smaller the better, I suspect even bookshelf-style speakers on stands would be too big.

Kef kht 2005.2 or the .3 if you can find them at that price.

2005.2 can be had for £200-250 on ebay.

can't remember the difference between .2 and .3.

Have you thought of a sound bar?

Cambridge Audio Lusso 20s : http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/summary.php?PID=813

you can get table top stands for them if needed, but they come with a little rubber foot.
2 different subs you can get too.

If they are to big look at boston acoustics soundware speakers, they are tiny.

Neat Iotas, a bit over budget, but tiny and frankly implausibly good sound.

I was having a demo for other kit and was just shown these and seriously couldn't my head around the size \ sound equation, was looking for a sub etc. I'll be picking up a pair in the near future.

If you can find a used pair of PMC DB1+ speakers they should be in budget...I sold mine as I found some bigger TB2+ models, but the DB1+ are amazing for their size, leagues ahead of typical 'lifestyle' speakers IMHO.

Another vote here for the Boston Soundware XS package - incredibly good sound from such discrete speakers!
