We split our business deposits across various institutions, including RBS and Santander. So, without notice from either bank, today I get a message when logging in to the former that our accounts have been shifted to (and are now managed by) Santander - all part of the RBS bailout T&Cs I now understand.

Thus, with all and sundry withdrawing funds from Santander, including £200m on Friday alone, I find myself as an involuntary depositor to the Spanish bank.

I'm off to make a transfer to another institution, to stay within protection limits.

Thought others out there might want to take note if in a similar position with RBS.

Your accounts have been shifted - are you sure about that?

As part of the RBS bailout the government required RBS to sell all of it's English branches before the end of this year.

They have agreed to sell them to Santander along with transferring all their English customers to them.

I've been getting letters from RBS about this for over a year now, the latest from about 10 days ago stated that the web address would change to rbs.co.uk/santander from the 20th of May.

The letter also states the key stages of moving accounts to Santander.

1. Keeping you informed
2. Preparing for a smooth transfer
........ both have now passed.

3. Explaining what it means for you.
4. Confirmation transfer is to go ahead.
5. Welcome to Hell.
... are yet to happen, and, of course, no dates are mentioned.

This is for a personal current and savings account - you mention saving business money - that may be different but I am surprised that you have not had any info from RBS.

I've been waiting for this - now I'm going to open a FD account - Santander has a reputation for being utterly crap when it comes to customer services.

If you want to stay with RBS (and don't need access to a branch), you can just move your account to an RBS branch in Scotland.

I've been caught by this as well. Not particularly impressed as Santanders reputation is not good.

ETA I'm a Natwest customer though. How does that work?!

If your Natwest and your in Scotland or RBS in England and you only want internet banking then you transfer to a branch in England or Scotland respectively.

Natwest in Scotland > going to Santander
RBS in England and Wales > going to Santander

Santander have a dreadful reputation.
