Without doubt increasing average speed at these levels increases fuel consumption. No tests needed. So therefore more fuel will be used, therefore more tax will be raised.
Its interesting that the government is finally considering this move when average speeds are clearly fallig, as people tighten spending and attempt to save fuel by moderating speed. I know my average speed on my commute has definatly fallen.

The Road Safety Foundation last week published a report titled "Unfit for 80" which claims the network will not safely support an 80mph limit. Not sure quite how influential this will be in the decision process of increasing the limit, but it will likely cast at least some doubt.

motorway recently ? It's patently obvious there are plenty of folks
doing over 80 mph on a regular basis.
There are regional variations. 80 mph makes you the fastest driver
in the whole of Scotland, but in M25 land, you'll be lane 1 fodder.
UK Gov's own numbers suggest some 20% of all cars exceed 80 mph
in practice anyway, so this is more about legalising current practice
than new freedoms.
Indeed, the Association of Chief Police Officers, not normally a
group given to wild and hysterical statements, have it that they
usually don't prosecute for up 10% + 2mph over the limit. So that's
90 mph in practice, or about 95 mph on the dial, before they
start to prosecute.

All thats happening is that the limit is being raised. You are not being made to drive at the new limit. People generally drive at a speed they feel comfortable at given the conditions at the time.
All thats happening is that a number of people who currenty fall foul of the law, will be able to continue legally.

Agreed. Revenue has reduced significantly due to more economical cars/reduction on miles. The government commissioned a report recently which the AA commented on around this topic. Cant find it at the minute.They do have think tanks !
I think most people will cruise between 70-80 leptons regardless of the limit being 70-80.
