My first reaction was YES boycott them but actually if you think about it, the Euro 2012 has highlighted a major problem that is in the Ulkraine and is now being addressed because of the publicity. I get that a lot of dogs have been killed before this has become apparent but may be now future dogs can be saved (or not born at all if they set up neutering schemes)

They were killing dogs long before the Euro 2012 was going to be there they've just upped the numbers they're doing.

I hope that a negative can be turned into a positive due to outside influences and pressures. I am quite a cynical person and this world can be a st place due to what us humans do to our fellow creatures (and each other) but every now and then I like to be hopeful, maybe this is one of those times!

I am all too cynical. I suspect that a few dogs would be put into kennels to make it look like they are doing something whilst loads are killed anyways and then the ones in kennels killed too after the press have gone back home..

Hate to say i agree with you. I still have images in my head of a horse at a VET SCHOOL at a romanian university being kept in the most awful conditions and starving to death because they were apparently going to dissect it in a couple of weeks so why bother feeding it? A bloody vet school had this attitude!

I actually don't recall seeing a lot of dogs in the big cities (although Kiev is the only properly big one I've spent any time in, Chernigov isn't terribly large) but I guess it probably scales and there are plenty of strays round our way.

The weird thing is there are packs of dogs that wander the streets and they can be intimidating at times (especially in winter when they are struggling for food/warmth) but also the pet dogs join the gangs at times - a lot of the owners seem okay with letting their dogs run loose to wander home when it suits them or they are called.
