I might be being a bit dim here but what advantage does the 1.8 TDCI have over the 2.0 TDCI in the new shape Mondeos?
The 2.0 has 140 bhp, 1.8 only hase 125
the 2.0 does better on fuel and has lower emissions and road tax
the only advantage I can see is the 1.8 is one insurance group lower but as we all know insurance is doolally anyway. Or is this something to do with company car tax?

Isn't the 1.8 cheaper to buy?

Thanks for that but I think Mr Tuna has answered my question for me, obvious when you think about it, I take it the 1.8 diesel is the old design engine dating back to the Escort Van with a little extra squeezed out of it.

erm.... I think you will find the block design goes back a little further than that.... The 1.8 Diesel was based around the kent 1600 block from the mk2 escort, albeit beefed up a bit....

go with the 2.0 lump much more modern design.

The 1.8 works as a good boat anchor when it dies. The aluminium block in the 2.0 doesn't work so well in that respect.
