Numpty Wireless Networking help needed.
Discussion
Hope someone can help out. I've been looking at the threads on wireless lately with interest as I have been planning to set one up for a while now. Well, it seems I have been a good boy at work and by way of a reward I have £100 to spend on Amazon.co.uk so figured this was my best cheap way in to wireless.
Thing is, what do I get, I find the descriptions a little vauge sometimes and wondered if you experts could help out.
I have the following and want them all networked together:-
1 laptop wireless 802.11b running Win2k Pro
1 laptop not wireless running XP (not sure if home or Pro)
1 PC with ethernet network on board running Win98 SP2
1 laser printer with Axis box
1 inkjet printer with Axis box
BT Business Broadband.
So I'm thinking I'll need a PCMCIA card for the laptop and a wireless modem/router with wired ports too?
Any ideas what I could choose from this lot? Many thanks in advance.

I have just gone wireless at home for our PC & laptop, bought the Belkin wireless modem/router and it works fine, however if like me your not a PC rocket scientist I found it very difficult to set up, They do have a service company who will do it for you for a cost of £89.00. (Belkin was £89.00 from PCW)but makes total cost expensive.
Good luck
OK. I'm assuming your printers and desktop are in the same room.
What you need is a WiFi hub/router. This will establis your BBand connection, and provide access for the desktop via conventional cat 5.
It will also have a couple of antenna that provide the wi-fi.
Your XP laptop appears to have 802.11 built in, so that's all good and will just connect up.
Your other laptop will need a WiFi card. I use a PMCIA jobbie. A mate uses a USB device. Horses for courses. Makes little difference.
This is all easy to setup.
Then you turn the WEP/mac filtering on, and swear at it for a bit. Then you fix it.
Don't pay someone to do it, it's not that hard.

Other way round, but I'm sure the principal is the same.
So I guess I need This one with a PCMCIA card too? That way everything will be connected?
Sorry for the dumb questions! Will it work with version 'B' and 'G'?
Whoops, yes. Sorry.
That link points to a decent 54G WiFi router.
Will also talk to B cards, but I I'm not sure if you can run it at 54Mbits if there are B spec cards in the system.
Not that it matters much, as your BBand link is unlikely to be more than 2mbps. Unless you're in the habit of moving large volumes of data between machines, you won't notice.

Not a problem, only 512 here, the only large volumes I move is my beer gut to the garden, if I go wireless I think I could bring a couple of extra tins rather than carrying cables out there
Thanks for the help.
No worries mate.
The only thing I'll reiterate is the B/G mix.
I run G. All my stuff is G.
I'm not sure if you can run that router in G mode if you have a mix of B and G cards. You may have to run the whole thing in B mode.
Not a problem, but connection from machine to machine won't be as quick as it could be.
Suspect it won't matter.

So here I am 'wireless' seems to be working well, got the network set so only specified MAC addresses can log on, but want some encryption too.
Can do it in the router and on the XP machine, but can find the place to do it in Win2K pro? Any ideas folks?
TIA.
Edited to add: How hot should these things get? It seems very hot to the touch.
