Sagaris slats: To open, or not to open?
Discussion
Lol - There are quite a few threads on this. The last one was about Jan-Feb time if I remember - with pics.
Here's one of them...

I think the cars look better with open slats. Closed look a bit ‘I'm just pretending… I'm really after market copy of race car!
’ a bit like the chav stuff they stick on VXR Corsa’s! Seriously though the only real benefit is to reduce front end lift at high speed by lowering under wing pressure from the rotation wheel/tyre.
The down side will be the crap that comes up thro the open vents I’d use a pretty closed mesh to reduce this (but only another Sag owner with open vents will confirm this… I guess it would be worth a chat with Dom @ Power) and the big down side with open slats is the amount of dirty rain water that comes up thro’ them in the wet. I have open slats on my race car ok they’re bigger than the Sags I'm usually blathered in crap and usually means a trip to the cleaners for my race suit, which won't happen with the Sag as it has a screen and roof + if you are a typical TVR'er you want take it out in the rain ;-)
As for affecting the price if it’s done properly/professionally why would it affect the price? And why would you be thinking about the next owner its your car; if you like the look of open slats then do it for you.
As with anything the final decision is yours....

As far as I'm aware all the open slat conversions are purely for aesthetic reasons as they close the inside of the wings again once opened by either inserting a moulded insert in there or creating a new inner wing, so no issues with rubbish or dirt being thrown up through them.
Personally I think they look fantasic when opened and create a really dramatic 'dragon's tooth' effect when looked at from the side.
As regards to value, as long as the job's been done properly I think it could only enhance teh value and as mentioned above it's your car don't worry about the next owner.

I might be wrong here but I am sure I remember chatting to Gaffer about her open slats (quiet at the back) and how much crap got flung through them onto the windscreen and down the sides of the car. Grubby water, the odd stone, horse$hit or whatever else you happen to drive over can get ejected striaght out of the top.
As has been said, I expect a black mesh in there would help a lot to stop stones and other solid debris...

Prototypes had little by way of an inner wing = yes, all sorts of crap did fly up.
Production cars have inner wings = crap cannot get up to and through the slats (as V8 GRF says... if done properly).
The best of all worlds would be to have enough of the inner wing cut away to release the presuure from the wheel arches (as was originally designed and intended by the factory), but at the same time mesh or inserts for the slats and good drainage for the water that accumulates. Although I'm a lover of the look of the mesh inserts, I'm with V8 GRF and Blackiepaul as to the look of the "devil's tooth" effect on the PDQ Developments inserts. All a matter of taste I guess, but if the factory had gone this route on the production cars, PDQ would have been the people chosen to do it as they were already working on the tooling I believe.
As far as values go.... IMO, this is one of the only 'cosmetic' mods that I foresee having no detrimental affect on values in the future.
Good afternoon Alex, I hope you are well this fine day

I haven't seen them in the flesh, only pictures. How do they work then? Are they bonded in?
For want of a better description they're like a plastic pouch that they insert into the slat after carefully cutting the rear surface of the vent. Using this method they can install them without damaging the paintwork. Each of the 'pockets' has a length of silicon hose attached that they feed through the wing to allow drainage.

Interesting - but that is exactly what I meant. I was shown that a cut 'gill' (for want of a better term), could flex with the push of a finger. Now think about the amount of force 100mph will create on that cut.... I'll concede that the PDQ cuts do seem to be a lot smaller than the meshed cuts, so maybe that stops the problem there? Each of the 'pockets' has a length of silicon hose attached that they feed through the wing to allow drainage.

)The mesh blended into the underside stops that flex and re-enforces the bodywork. The major downsides to this method are the fat the entire section needs respraying, and the cost increases dramatically (along with time etc spent).
What I really like about it, is there are two (or more) companies out there showcasing different ways of doing it. And that has got to be a good thing!
I see what you're suggesting but the inserts are very rigid and are then bonded in postion and are probably as strong as the mesh so I'd be very surprised if they flex. As you'll see from that thread I linked to they where done by the guys who actually had a hand in designing/building the car so I'm pretty sure they've done the job properly.
