Let's start by saying that we all enjoy a spirited blast down B roads in our petrol guzzling extensions. But who out there like me likes tramping about in van just as much?

Not quite a van, but I loved driving a ford F250 in canada on the road as well as on trails, completely diferent experience.

From when I did a stint in a white van related job, being obliged to wolfwhistle every woman in a skirt was a nice bonus too.

When I was driving all over the country at weekends racing motorbikes, I enjoyed driving long wheelbase, high top Mercedes 312 Sprinter vans.

Luckily for us, there was a local Mercedes Van specialist that also did hire - and the guys on the hire desk were into their bikes and racing. Hence, I quickly ended up getting matey rates - collecting a van on Friday afternoon and dropping it back in the early hours of Sunday night, using it to drive all over the country - and they only charged me for one day's hire - £50!

Collecting the van and driving it to the workshop where the bikes were 20 miles away was always a laugh - I took the 'B' roads and enjoyed the full performance of an empty 312 biggrin

Despite their size and length, you'd be amazed at how they will do a full 180 degree handbrake turn in a big empty car park biggrin

Then once loaded with two race bikes, and a mountain of tool chests, spares, tyres, wheels, gazebo, fuel and 3 people - the vans would transport us in swift luxury to our destinations - and late at night, even fully loaded, that would still be at 3 figure speeds evil

One of our favourite games, having to share countless miles of Motorways with car driving mouth breathers, was 'car pushing.'

I've no idea how we got away with this and never heard anything or got a nicking - but it whiled away the boredom of long journeys and maybe, just maybe, taught one or two car drivers a lesson. Although looking back on it (10 years ago plus) now I'm a bit more grown up, it was a bit stupid and dangerous...

So what we did was, if we came across a middle lane moron with no traffic to his inside for miles ahead, we'd go into lane 3 and start to overtake. We would then pull alongside the offending MLM, slow to it's pace, and place the van so that the cab was just past the front of the car, and they now directly were alongside the big, white expanse of the side of the van.

Then we would start 'pushing.' Very slowly and gently - driiiiiift across lane 3 to the white line. Then onto the white line with the nearside wheels - badum badum badum went the cat's eyes. Then a few inches into lane 2 with the nearside wheels. Then a few more inches. Then a few more.

By now, Mr. MLM has woken up, and we strained our ears to hear the commencement of their horn being blown, and look to the inside mirror to enjoy the high beam light show.

But we werent satisfied by that. A few more inches. A few more. Now 2 feet. Now 3. Now 4. Now 5, 6 - and finally the whole lane. Success! The MLM is now in lane 1, where they fking well belong, the idiotic s biggrin

Then we'd accelerate away, watching the receding high beam light show in the nearside mirror, and if we were really lucky, lots of hand gesticulations too - but sadly we couldn't see these if it was dark frownbiggrin

Yep, I had a lot of fun in vans biggrin

I loved hooning about in my Escort Van. If you blow the doors off a sports car in a normal car, no one cares, just think boy racer. When you do it in a diesel van with a cloud of coal spewing out the back, you can see the drivers penis shrinking out of his anus.

Plus it felt more rewarding to go into some corners way faster than you should and coming out the other side still on the black stuff.

I need a new van. Even if I just turn it into a track slag.

Vans are great. 7.5 ton truck which are the biggest I can legally drive are even better...

There is a certain pleasure to be had thrashing your employers van knowing that all repairs, fuel and maintenance is gratis. Due to the oil burners short rev range and poor acceleration I am the last of the late breakers and maximise corner speed; roundabouts are the best place to overtake when you work in mk. I have chipped my van and rev it hard but the turbo lag is terrible so being in the right gear is a must.

I often see drivers of decent motors look shocked to see me overtake them on the outside at a particularly tight bend of dual carriageway, sometimes with the van on two wheels 20mph faster than them. Sadly on the straights then blast past me again until the next roundabout.

Vans are crap, I do 40,000 miles a year in them (for the last 10 years) at a (now) limited 70mph, poor riding, poor handling, poor performance and poor ergonomics, the only saving grace is the visibility and big mirrors.

As for pushing other road users around, that is just plain muppetry, you only need to frighten someone once into a potentially serious mistake, I wouldn't like to try and explain in court how I was trying to push them back into the correct lane and they panicked and wiped themselves out at 70mph.

I love driving my works Transit minibus. Even if I have to carry passengers. As I know the roads I use well, I can hustle the old girl along at a good lick - pity about the 62mph limiter furiousfurious

A number of times I've caught up and passed cars. Scared the st out of a girly in her Polo last week as a fully laden Transit screamed past her in a cloud of particulates biggrinbiggrin

Van drivers get a lot of stick in the press for being a bunch of tts but I can guarantee you that when you are waiting to pull out of a junction it will be a van that lets you out after 20 snobs in debt mobiles have driven past ignoring you.

Vans are brilliant!

At the moment I drive a Peugeot Partner for work which is a sad excuse for a van but I once hired a 'proper' T5 VW Transporter which was just amazing - I have never seen so many cars politely pull over and let me pass.

It also had the gearstick positioned so that in top gear you could rest your hand on it and nudge the indicators on the motorway.

I have never felt so manly as I did when I was in that white van. I don't need an SUV to feel big, I need a van!

I had a 57 plate crafter for four years and 120,000 miles. Lovely motor (but forever breaking down). Still ten times better than the noisey old 04 plate transit I had before that.

I now have a 12 plate crafter with the newer 2.0 tdi lump, really nice drive and much better on fuel too.

I drive Sprinter fridge vans for work (large rear compartment), which are more or less road legal sails by the amount they move about with the slightest of wind. Still some good fun to be had.

Got a Transit hired next week and as I'm needing it for 5 days I've taken it for 7 as it's just as cheap, so will be using it to hoon about in (empty I may add..) biggrin

Very true, although I have to say since taking up work driving vans I am amazed at how courteous the majority of people are.
