Now here's a funny one!

I thought that I had found a great car - 2006 Vogue 4.2 SC (07 MY) - but a full HPi check showed that there was a mileage discrepancy early in its life.

At 24k it required a new engine for whatever reason, which was done by Stratstone Land Rover. Nothing unusual you might say, except for the new engine apparently had 14k miles on it confused

Is this likely to be the case (the guy at Stratstones said they definitely did it).

Now, should they have just left the odometer at 24k? What actually happened was that the mileage was adjusted back to the new (let's call it replacement) engine's 14k (hence the out of kilter mileage report).

Can anyone in the know shed light on a main dealer fitting a replacement engine with 14k on it on a year old RRV?

AND... considering that this was 55k miles and five years ago and the car is and drives lovely. Is it worth taking on board for a fairly substantial reduction in price (I'm talking thousands)?

Thanks,
al

All engines fitted by main dealers are, AFAIK, remanufactured engines. The dealer gets a 'new' engine and the old one is sent back to be refurbished. Therefore the new engine probably wasn't new at all and therefore this is quite feasible that the engine had blown at 14k and been sent to LR for refurbishment before being fitted in this car.

you can order a brand new engine but the price will shock you!!

if its a land rover refurbished it will carry all the necessary warranty so i'd not be worried

The mileage also doesn't surprise me. Not knowing the ins and outs of LR ECU setups, the mileage is often coded to the engine ECU, so if that was carried over from the replacement engine then the new mileage may have just stayed with the engine.

If you're getting a bargain and the relevant authorities know about the swap, and there is good history (which by the sound of it there is) then I think it could be a bargain!

...and the refurbished engine was probably built with more care and detail than the original new mass produced one.

We suspect that the mileage discrepancy is a case of the dealer pressing a 2 instead of a 1. On the same day the mileage is shown at 14,347 AND 24,347. A bit coincidental that the last three digits are exactly the same, then it reverts back to 14k.

We are tracking down the invoice through Sratstone for the engine replacement but i must say, when trying to tie up and cross reference the other services it has been a night mare. I rang one big name dealership to check a service and they had absolutely nothing on record. Alarm bells start ringing. After God knows how many phone calls and emails, the dealer finally came back with "oh yes, here it is. We had your number down as another vehicle (a 56 plate on an old HSE no less!). So we now have a faxed copy of the service invoice. Another dealer just forgot to stamp the book. They have confirmed the work was done and I will be going in to get the service book stamped.

It's not easy is it!

Its not easy dealing with Stratstone !!! Imho.

Just make sure it doesent invalidate the land rover warranty, had a sport from them that had replacement engine other issues, in the end LR said the warranty was invalid, after a fight I got my money back.

Whether an engine has 1 mile or 1 million miles on it is irrellevant..The Odometer of any vehicle should not be altered by anyone ??

Its called clocking and is illegal??

Stop off at another main dealer today who were really helpful and he ran a check on all the time sit had been in to a main dealer.

Seems that some plunker did in fact enter the wrong mileage on the database when it was a year old! This wasn't realised until it next went in. It is even noted on the car's record.

So, once I can get all the paperwork together hopeful I can get the NMR to amend. If not, no biggy. It was four years and sixty odd thousand miles ago, and I'll have paperwork to show the true tale.

The car is a beauty though. A joy to drive and look at smile

very true ref Stratstone - they are just too large and part of the even larger Pendragon Group

service varies hugely from one dealership to the next

from my findings of dealing with them is that they prefer the 'business user' who basically throws the keys on the desk and says 'fix it' - and pays for the work via his company/leasing!

having spent far too much time sitting in the waiting area of my local dealership i can tell you that the vast majority of 'private' customers are not happy with the level of service

they put up with it because they are the nearest dealership

also unless you are very lucky most of the technicians were at school when the earlier L322's were launched (early 2000's) and know little and care even less about these cars

Cheers Nick. here's just a quick shot of it smile

I will be booking in to Pickering LR next week on recommendation of LHD on here to have a full major service/check over and see about putting a tow bar on. Any know the best place for boot liners or shall I just use the dealer?

looks really nice

though i've never really liked the fixed side steps and think they don't do a lot for the cars profile (sorry but just an opinion) - i'm disabled and find the type shown to be pretty poor - BUT i do love the deployable type and they would be ideal for me - sadly they don't fit a 2005/6 car!

ref boot liners - i have several for shooting/fishing - for general use i use the OEM flat boot liner - but when things get messy with bambi etc i use the 'Custom Covers' Range Rover Vogue Custom Boot Liner - approx £63 delivered (2011 prices)

various OEM boot liners appear on ebay but because of size/weight they are realistically collection only

ref towbars - i used PF Jones who use landrover OEM parts (or should i say land rover use westphalia parts?) and will come and fit it at your home/work - far cheaper than landrover

i did not want the detatchable type as i needed a 'flange plate' so i can use different plates depending on what i tow - eg one tralier has a 'hitch pin' rather than a ball
