My dads insurance policy for a 320i (E93) states that the car is insured for any driver over 25 fully comp but it also says that any driver under 25 can drive it third party does this mean I being 17 and hold a full uk licence mean that I am eligible without being a named driver on any other car be able to drive the car third party or do I have to be a named driver on a policy?

I believe you've got it backwards. The policy allows your dad to drive any car, not the other way around.

Yep, will be the other way around. He'll be covered to drive other cars, not anybody covered to drive his car. You'd have to be a named driver on it.

I know Liverpool Victoria used to do policies like this back in the day. They're rare now, and damn expensive, but on the face of what the OP has written, that's exactly what it means.

However I'd be surprised if the OP's account of what is in the policy is both accurate and complete, i.e., hasn't left out stipulations about residence at the same address, situations in which the car can be driven (e.g., a fleet policy for employees only) and so on.

Plus a broken E93 is expensive to fix, so just because it's not illegal to drive doesn't mean it's a good idea.

If only insurance did work this way. You could get your dad to insure your Impreza for £300 and then drive it yourself legally third party.

The co-op used to do 'any driver' policies about 10 years ago. I very much doubt they exist now.

Aviva still do it on their policies. If you opt for any driver, it'll be comp for drivers 25+ (assuming it's a comp ploicy) and TPO for drivers under 25.

This - just run a test quote through and the schedule specifies Comp for drivers 25+, TPO for driver 24 and under.

However, the operative endorsement does state: "Any changes to the details you have supplied in respect of persons who to your knowledge will drive the vehicle must be advised to the insurer at each renewal date of the policy." I'm not sure if that means if you expect a person under 25 to drive the vehicle, they have to be declared to the insurer - the 'any driver' part of the cover is just designed to cover emergencies.

Unless your Dad has a very old policy with someone like Zurich, as everyone else has said, you read it wrong.

There is however the chance that your old man has had a policy running for 20 odd years, and still has those terms on it. We still have one, it's like a 'gold dust' policy!

Even with 9+ years ncb? I know he pays about £800 which I thought to be pricey for a 5 year old 3 series I re-read the policy and in the box which says Driver(s) on this policy - my dads name and under any person(s) over 25 fully comprehensive and under 25 third party only I'm sure it can't be right but at the same time it could, it is only to pick

OP, based on your last post then it does indeed appear as if your dad has an any driver policy with FC for 25= and TPO for 24 and under, just double check the other policy restrictions to ensure its doesn't stipulate 'all drivers must have held a full UK licence a minimum of 12 months' or wording to that effect, if thats not in there then you should be fine.

Or a few other potential restrictions. Or the fact that any E93 is still £12k even at 100k miles.
