My dog (Vizsla) at this time of year seems to enjoy munching on long steams of grass. Is this a common thing? Obviously little nutrients in it so I'm guessing they just like the taste or texture?

Problem is it doesn't digest and therefore doesn't easily come out the other end at Number 2 time leaving him uncomfortably dragging his bum along the ground until I clear the mess. Nice hurl

Sorry - that was meant as a question... Our two Labs got into this when they were pups, we wormed them and they stopped.

Worth a try - good luck and let us know how you get on smile

Our two must constantly have worms, then!

Their favourite is when the dew is still fresh.

It's not reflective of needing worming.

My dogs will both stand and graze the grass this time of year. The simple answer (IMO) is that they like it as it's fresh and tasty this time of year. I see them go mad for it every year about this time.

Ours do this. Feels faintly ridiculous to let them out into the garden, only to stand watching them graze like cows, moving on a couple of feet every few minutes.

They do seem to love it though.

My favourite is when a particularly recalcitrant blade causes them to cough/retch it back up, then they pick it up and have another bash at it. rolleyes

Glad it's not just mine then. Although it sounds as if I am the only one that has to clear up the mess the other end?! Pulling blades of grass out of my dogs bum was not what I had envisaged with dog ownership biglaugh

Dogs are not just carnivores. They will eat grass for food and for medicinal purposes. Yes they will graze
like cows on the fresh shoots, also they will find that special grass that a few minutes after eating they
will start that whole body heave until they bring everything up. The funny thing is if it tasted good the
first time they ate it, they will clean up the barf for you.

Some of my dogs have in the past some never bothered with grass.

I try not to let them as sometimes it makes them sick or as you say its like pulling flags out of a clowns sleve.

Stella is eating grass lately and so is my friends Cairn Terrier. Must be like asparagus season to them or something hehe

Our dog loves grass - she always has. We just put it down to her being a stray and developing a taste for it in the absence of any proper food.

That said, she'll do anything for broccoli as well, so maybe she's just a dog that likes green stuff. smile

OP, no, you're not the only who occasionally has to "assist" at the other end...

Also have to do it with hairs. :ew:

Yep, pulling long grass shoots out of my Max's (40KG) arse is something I always enjoy (not!) lol. What does make me laugh is that he is Sooo happy once it's been removed, he jumps about with joy. I just pray I don't have to deal with it in a busy public space! Trouble is, he always wants to sit down which is not conducive to pulling grass from his ass. Hey, a little rhyme there wink
