Warning: Speed Camera Alerts Illegal on Sat Nav

For those going to Le Mans, beware that it's now illegal to have speed camera warnings on your Sat Nav.

I imagine Les Flics will be cracking down on this from the Brits.

Interesting though is that they are not allowed to reach in you car and check the sat Nav without your permission. Good luck arguing with them though.

If nav has it, but you have it switched off, is that OK?

Yes. In fact they have no legal standing or right to search your equipment, however if they suspect you are using it by evidently slowing at a fixed point etc then they'll potentially pursue it further.

Thank you. I only ask as I'll be using my Garmin as a KPH speedo.....and I'll probably forget to turn the alerts off anyway!

Been trying to update the built in sat nav. Now being told I have to send the hard drive back to clarion!!!
Has anyone else had a similar situation ?? I was kinda hoping to download update on to a USB stick and transfer.

I got back from France a couple of weeks ago. Before we left I up dated our Tom Tom for Europe and it took the speed cameras off for France.

I've been looking at my TomTom and can't see how, just by going through the menu they would know whether or not speed cameras were installed as a POI.

If I connect the camera to the computer it gives me the option to up-date speed cameras for various countries but if I don't tick them, does it un-install the speed camera warnings already installed'

It's a completely bonkers law and wholly unenforcable, but I wouldn't want to have to argue the point with le plod at the roadside.....

Apart from not having Sat Nav at all, I don't know what other way there may be to avoid a particularly nasty copper demanding €1500.....

I got a note from Tom Tom a while ago and loaded an update before my last French trip at easter, it worked a treat.

Basically thought looks like they've agreed with the authorities to reclasssify speed camera sites as danger zones and they are flagged up for a loner distance than the precise placing of a speed camera. Only some Tom Tom devices can be updated though so it's also a way of helping sell more new Tom Toms!
