Hi all
Im new to this forum and am hoping you guys can help a fellow wedger out. Im trying to source a new fuel tank sender unit for my 1984 280i DHC. The old one is totally shot and although a gallon can of fuel in the boot keeps me out of trouble its a right pain in the a**e not knowing how much fuel ive got. Also it cant be good to keep running the tank too low and risk getting a load of crud coming down the fuel system. Thanks Fellow wedgers

Hi Mate and welcome to the mad world of wedges...When i replaced mine a fuel sender for a classic mini was used..I think a ford transit van might fit as well..The arm might need to be bent a little..Not sure if this will fit yours but it did fit a 1982 280i..Cheers..Ziga

Cheers Zig
Its not exactly the same as mine - float is different & only 1 electrical connection mine has 2 though i guess the mini used the tank itself as an earth. All the rest looks identical though and should work a treat.
Many thanks Rocket

Hi Zig
Thanks for looking but the sender in the second link looks identical to the first one. I think ill do a bit more digging to see if i can identify the exact sender i need. not knowing whats in the tank is just so bloody annoying but dont want to waste the hard earned on something that aint gonna work. Again thanks for your efforts Zig

Hi Mate...I have just found the receipt for mine..I bought it from David gerald TVR and it was a smiths 6 screw fixing sender unit..Its not cheap though..45 sobs + vat..I think i ordered it on the strength of what gauges i have fitted, I think i messed up as i have stuart warner and ordered a smith sender..Probably why its in-accurate..It might be worth a call..Cheers..Ziga

Hi Zig
Quick update, been trying to locate a part No or something for the sender unit but to no avail, so had a change of tackideaand decided to repair the existing. the problem was a broken wire on the winding within the sender unit, so a small blob of solder soon sorted that out, sender back in and appears to be working ok.smile
only time will tell how successful the repair proves to be but at least the tank doesnt read empty all the time.

The winding itself is probably just some standard resistance wire so it the blob doesn't work long-term you could get some wire off fleabay for a few quid and rewind it.

Is it easy to access the sender ?

Is it wheel off and a tight squeeze, or can it be got to from above (carpet removal rear shelf)

Hi Mate..On the 280 its on the rear of the drivers side fuel tank which is only accessible from under the car..Should be the same on the 350..?..cheers..Ziga

Zigs right can only be reached from underneath. took me about 20 min to get mine out, its just very awkward with chassis tubes and the prop being just where you would like to put your arms. Held on with 6 bolts - a 7mm spanner seemed to fit best
