My drivers door has developed an intermittent fault. When you press the button under the wing mirror you can hear mechanical whirring but the door stays closed. After a couple of presses it pops open correctly.

Except this evening when it would not pop open. The roof was out (hot day) so I leant in and open it via the knob. Standing there scratching my head I heard a loud clunk from the affected area. After that the door worked fine.

So what is sticking and how do I get to it? Solenoid somewhere?

If you can hear a noise every time you push the button it is probably just the door opening solenoid calling it a day. No idea what the loud clunk could be, it needs a bit of a poke around in there to see what is going on. It is mounted in the void under a flap above the seat belt.

If that turns out to be the case then Maplin do them, part number YD79L.

Thanks.

The clunk sound was in fact the door lock dis-engaging, which explains why the button under the mirror was not opening the door. Quite why the lock was engaged in the first place is probably the question. I had only just stepped out of the car, closed the door behind me, then turned around to open it again (left my phone inside). No key fob presses or any other such human interference.

My suspicions lie with that little button on top of the centre console door knob. Press it to lock the doors then when you twist the knob to get out it surely must release the lock!

Pushing the button locks the doors in the same way as the alarm does when arming - electrically.

Twisting the knob pulls on two cables (one each door) that pops the door open - mechanically.
