2007 M5 - What to look for
Discussion
I currently have a 525 M Sport Touring, and a local garage has a 2007 M5 Touring for sale. It's priced about right and mileage is good for the age. I plan to go and see it in the next couple of days. Can anyone give me some pointers at what problems I should look for, and whether I should go for it at all?
I've just got back from a 350 mile trip in my E61 Tourer and throughout the trip was reminded that this is the best fast estate car I've ever owned and almost definitely the best car I've ever owned. Its not the most wallet friendly or prettiest car on earth and at sub 20mpg on the motorway its not the most economical but my word is it involving and precise. The Tourer gets so many looks of admiration and disbelief too, more id say than its saloon alternative.
Read the sticky at the top and take it from there. Any questions just ask.

Eddy's sticky says pretty much all.
Couple of extra minor things to look out for are noisy panorama roofs and the rear electric cargo covers that either dont retract or go back to position.
Mine was up for sale recently (too many cars) but managed to sell the wife's car first so the Touring is a keeper. Id forgotten what an involving drive it is and I cant beleive I was contemplating getting rid.
They dont make cars like this anymore for sure and its the last of the breed. Get one while you still can!

the buyers guide is a good place to start... Id recomend you check the tyres as rears alone are over £700... also check the idrive for when the next services are due as it tells you things like brakes etc so a good guide to how much servicing is needed in XX miles.
Usual stuff is make sure all the electrics work, there are no strange knocks (its a quiet car but the engines do rattle a little on idle) and if your undecided if you like the car, switch it to P500 mode with stage 6 on the gearchange (needs traction control off) and give it some beans till redline... you will then be decided

I wouldn't get too hung up on mpg figures. Its only one element of the overall running costs of these cars.
I normally get 17mpg out of mine on average which is maybe a couple of mpg less than you'd realistically get from say a c63?....not brilliant but hardly worth getting worried about in the grand scale of things.

My M5 (e39) manages 27mpg at 75mph, makes me feel rich in comparison!
