Gentlemen, ladies.

I'm in the pub, so please excuse errors.

SHMBO has just called. The pioneer 5080 appears to have just gone pop.

The timing is perfect, as she's 7months pregnant and I have a horrible feeling we have a eurovision party on Saturday.

Need a screen. Need one fast.

3d is of zero interest
Sound is of zero interest
Colour reproduction, accuracy and fluid movement are key

Panasonic Viera still the pick of the bunch?

Picked up my 42" GT50 from John Lewis 2 days ago and I'm very happy with it. The picture quality is excellent!

What were the symptoms? My 5080 sometimes won't switch on with the remote and requires removal/replacement of the plug-in power cable to "re-set" it.

Powered on from remote, black screen and strobed the blue light (she didn't count how many).
She then turned it off at the wall, and back on again, and there were no lights at all.

I got home and removed the power cable, had a cup of tea and then replaced it. Fired up no problem.

Most odd. I'm hoping it won't come back

Ha.
It came back.
No lights at all now. I suspect the power supply isn't living up to the second part of it's name.
Buggeration.

50" Panny GT50 - extraordinary clarity, warmth and depth to the images, a world away from my last plasma tv and hard to see how the picture could ever be bettered.

Even by the fabled VT50.

I think the VT is out of sensible price range (and i'd be paying for some 3d glasses I don't really want).

VT/GT/ST share the same panel with different amounts of processing witchcraft?

How superior is a GT to the ST?

The VT has a full width glass panel but PH'ers and even the shop salesman say it's not worth the extra (or any) money over the GT.

I saw ST and GT side by side in shops but there were too many variables for a meaningful comparison.

The VT50 appears to be the sweetspot of the range and I didn't even think it was expensive.

What's your budget as someone will be along shortly with a link to discounted VT50's.

Very much appreciated - I'm going to let a little man with a soldering iron have a go at resurrecting the Kuro first (partly for cost reasons, mainly because I really like the screen).

If he fails, I shall be looking hard at (probably) a GT50. And of course the best deal I can find.

Just in case anyone is interested, I've had a play and the fault mode appears to be as follows.

If the TV is left on standby, when you attempt to power it up it fails. If you then switch on and off at the wall, the TV appears utterly dead; no lights at all.

If you unplug it and leave it for a couple of hours, and then reconnect, she seems to work fine. Once on, stays on. Picture looks perfect.

So, hopefully a blown capacitor somewhere in the power train? Hopefully fixable....

And the verdict is....
....dead mainboard. Not cheap, if a replacement can be found at all.

So I'm looking down the barrel of a new TV.

Now, this years 50" GT50, or last years 50" VT30 for a very tempting sub £1100...

Anyone know anyone who has an interest in a PDP5080 for spares/repair?
