Alternative to penalties
Discussion
So everyone's favorite FIFA pres wants an alternative to penalties- http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18205513
So whats your suggestion?
I like penalties. Both teams have had two hours to win the game, and both teams cant keep playing because then players will be at risk from injury. The game has to end, its a harsh way to lose, but fair. But if we are going to have an alternative, I rather like the idea of a both teams taking free kicks from outside the area with a 3 man wall- tests skill.

Why not do it a lá Ice Hockey? Player vs keeper, from the halfway line. None of this shooting from a spot, and keeper cannot come off his line. Keeps it as one on one, but gives the keeper, and player a chance to actually do something?
Just think of David Luiz's run up for that then... Despite last Saturday, our (Chelsea's) record in pen shootouts has been rubbish. But I still can't think of anything better.
It annoys me when people say it's a lottery. If it was a lottery, then me and 4 mates from the pub could play out 10 shootouts against the German national side, and expect to win half!!
It's a pure test of nerve and skill. No luck involved at all. If anything, the match itself is more of a lottery than the pen shootout.

I get very angry when a professional footballer misses the target. Wft is that all about? It's a 24ft by 8ft hole straight in front of you, ffs.
I'm an office bod. I fill in forms. Occasionally I make and error and get the form wrong, but never once, in 30 yrs, have I missed the form and written on the desk!

Team with the most shots on target during the 90 minutes wins. If that is a draw then most corners.
I think they need to rule out extra time altogether and the team that shows more attacking prowess should prevail.
But then you just end up with teams pelting the goal, just to add to their tally. I think they need to rule out extra time altogether and the team that shows more attacking prowess should prevail.

Every knock out game should start with penalties! This would give the team that loses the shoot out a massive incentive to play for a win during normal and extra time as the draw result is already decided.
That sounds pretty good actually.Stops teams just defending for the draw and creates a bit of tension watching one team desperately go for goal.

It's common to see kids teams doing that as half time entertainment but with a 10 second time limit to shoot. Got to allow the keeper some freedom of movement (They'd easily get chipped if they strayed too far) but it's probably weighted in favour of the shooter as much as penalties.Penalties are a fairly quick and exciting way to sort out 2 hours of stalemate. Even on dedicated sports channels, or for those in the ground the show has to conclude on some reasonable schedule.

Surely the team who won the shoot out beforehand will happily play for a draw, rather than risk weakening their defense? It goes both ways. It is a bit like the golden goal rule. It doesn't seem to make much in the way of frantic play for fear of conceding.Stops teams just defending for the draw and creates a bit of tension watching one team desperately go for goal.
