I have had a good selection of cars over the years, I always wanted to own a 4X4 and use it as a light hack + towing dutys. I did go to view one years ago but it had been hard worked so i walked away.

I have been looking at Pajero's for this coming winter , Looking at SWB ones any pointer to look for, or common faults or issues and what about engines 2.5 Diesel or the 2.8? (Not wanting a petrol) on what king of Mpg Urban would you get out of each?

My max budget would be around 2k ideal 1500 quid or is this to little for a car with less than 100k in good order.

Cheers Scotty

Hi Scotty. I bought a 2.5TD SWB last novemebr for the winter, and still have it! I got lucky, and bought a 1 UK owner (since '93), manual g/box, 52k miles with stacks of paperwork, 4 new tyres, exhaust, blah blah blah, close to mint, for £1400. It actually drives better than my mate's 57 plate L200!!! I must get roughly 24mpg round town, and low to mid 30s on a run. Drive a few though. Mine will sit at a respectable speed, ahem, all day long, but others I have been in struggle to get anywhere near the NSL!!!

These things seem to go forever if looked after, so 150k shouldn't really put you off. Just try and buy one that has had a lot of preventative maintenance done, i.e. diff/gearbox/transfer box oils changed, timing belt and serviced and you shouldn't go far wrong. Also, as they are imported, they all seem to have after market immobilisers fitted. Try to get one with the spare transponder key. My mate never, and he had a nightmare getting it stripped out and replaced!

The parts are cheap enough if you do need to fix anything.

I actually happen to know a mate who is selling one this very instant. He bought it as a support vehicle for a motorbike ride across Europe and Morocco and loved it so much he kept it for another year.

It looks like it' been around a bit i.e. a proper off roader smile But as far as I know it's been reliable. I think it's below the spec you want, but it's cheap as chips.

Just outta interest, you comment on not wanting a petrol? Apart from the lower buying prices, any reasons why?

On a full tank, my 3.5v6 paj got 20 miles less than my 2.8td paj. It worked out cheaper to run in the end in the petrol, and a lot more fun when the loud pedal was used!

My dad has had a 1993 LWB 2.8 Auto since the beginning of time.

Been 100% reliable, only gets around 20-25mpg out of it though.

Tows really well. Used it to tow and launch a 26ft cabin cruiser. Approx 2.5-3 tons all up. Didn't bother it.

IIRC the 2.5 is a belt cam where the 2.8 is a chain. Could be completely wrong. I was about 12 when he bought it and I think that was one of the reasons he went for the 2.8.

Yeah thats what most of his driving is nowadays so probably about right. Auto box doesn't help either to be honest.

What its been up to over the years...
