Focus power steering calamity
Discussion
Had to shell out £300 for a new pump today - even though the old one was working fine! The reason being that the ECU in the pump (didn't know such a thing existed) wasn't communicating with the main ECU and therefore throwing up a warning light - hence a sure fire MOT failure. Just wondering if 300 squid seems like a good deal to anyone? Sodding electronincs, eh!?
The Focus Mk2's all have Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering.
It's for energy saving and variable assistance based on vehicle speed (mainly).
The pump is driven by an electric motor, controlled by an ECU.
The other benefits include:
1. Packaging, you can mount it virtually anywhere as it doesn't need to be attached to the engine. (Yours is in the front bumper)
2. Flow rate is not dependent on engine speed.
It's probably one of the opto-isolators on the CAN channel has failed.
