Petrolheads not commenting on this!

Yes it is silly, win the Lottery then enter the gumball must be the dream of many out there.

So, what car and why?

Is it just a lot of rich petrolheads do silly thing is car that cost too much? Do you want to join them? (YES! YES!! YES !!!)

I would do it in a silly car... like a mini fitted with two engine or a diesel V8 (1000bhp) milk float! Very Benny Hill!

PH'er Shmee is doing it, loads of updates on facebook etc.

I know it gets frowned upon by many, but money no object I would love to do it - however as a petrol head one of the PH Nirvana tours would be a much better experience.

forgot what it's called, but isn't there a shed version of the gumball still going? because that sounds much more fun

I still love Alex Roy's idea of a supersaloon fake police car loaded with every conceiveable speed gun detector, radar gun, gps unit etc going smile

mental isn't it. I think he also had some military spec, gyro stabilised bino's for the passenger to use for spotting the police.

He has multiple sat navs, and Raytheon night vision camera on the front.... the man was prepared alright!

I think the whole death crash then trying to flee the country while on bail incident put a dampener on mainstream media interest in this, that and the we'll drive on public roads along with normal traffic but it's not a race wink wink aspect.

Scumball or Scumrun was one, don't know if it still going. There were others..

I met a block entering this once, nice chap with a £400 MR2.

I remember one form Austaila called the Burk to Burk Town. A bit crazy, as there were no rules! It end with the teams have to swim a river, no idea why?

Over the summer we're doing a rally in the US with a chap that did the 1975 and 1979 Cannonball Runs. I seem to remember 40 hours coast to coast was his best. No mucking around with bellend parties every evening on those!

I don't blame Max for doing them as it's a good business for him. Not my cup of tea though. For that money there are far more fun things to do with cars. I shipped my GT to the Bahamas, raced it staying with Sir Stirling and Lady Moss in the Al Capone's old house for a third of the Gumball entry fee.

Kim Schmitz was a complete nutter in the Gumball. Him, Alex Roy and and Lonman were good in it, a shame they don't do it anymore.

I've watched the Gumball go past my house every time they do the European run.

I'd have to do it in something like a Ferrari 575 or a 996 GT2.

Equally, the Cannonball Run is still up and running isn't it?

Hmm, not sure what i'd pick, but my 'out there' choices would probably be a lightly massaged B-platform mid-90s Impala SS or a Buick GNX, not sure why but better than drowning in a sea of 430s and DB9s.

I love alex roy's Team Polizei cars, i remember watching a bit where the gumballers had to get a passport stamp over at the thai border (dont know the year), and Roy was mistaken for a EU inspector type, since he drove a complete Polizei livery bentley and wore a very well faked police uniform.

Two years back we actually ended up in the middle of some gumballers in belgium, we were returning north from antwerp and noticed spectators on all the overpasses, then when we stopped at a petrolstation, we noticed a gumball stickered R8. While we were watching traffic we spotted a few ferraris and a lambo.

Cool stuff to see.

I suspect Kim may not be in Gumball rally this year. One of his alternative names is Kim Dot Com the recently arrested owner of mega upload. (He was also ranked #1 on Call of Duty on XBox)

As said above Gumball isn't a driving event, I'd imagine most proper Petrolheads (and not Hello magazine readers) would rather join Petrolhead Nirvana for instance.

To me, the idea of driving like a dick, in a brightly marked car when the Police are actively on the look out for you doesn't sound fun.

He was great yes

Anyone else read his book - 'The Driver'?

It catalogues his record attempt for the fastest West to East (or was it East to West?) crossing of the USA.

But I still can't decide if it's real, or he just wrote it as a complete fabrication of fiction??? confused

Guess we'll never know!
