Not sure anyone is that bothered about me spoiling GP3, but just in case!

Did anyone see the live race just now? The 3 Brits tried to go into the first (or second) corner where there was room for 2! Unfortunate as it was a nice move by Alice Powell on Brundle I though!

Conor Daly also tried to leave the circuit after (repeatedly!) running into the back of another car.

Not sure if this had been at F1 speeds quite what the end result would have been! Not pretty though I'd wager.

Though it wasn't exactly clever that the guy ahead of him was defending with no rear wing, it was just an accident waiting to happen.

Wasn't nice to watch - the guy in front was a moving chicane - never staying on-line.

Glad everyone is OK

Yup, should have been black flagged.

Apparently he was shown, and duly ignored, the black & orange flag and had therefore been excluded from the results!

Putting the Marshals right up against the fence on a mobile tower scaffold...what a great idea! rolleyes

Well it's only a few years ago we still had unprotected marshals. The sport will continue to learn... and to be fair to Monaco, they have a lot of experience, are meticulous in their planning and leave nothing to chance (and don't have any cost issues), so I think it is a "learning point" rather than incompetence in safety planning.

Monaco is so very space constrained, and you need a balance between given the marshal the best view of the track and protecting them - I don't think this was such an error of judgement, but sure it can be improved.

Suranovich was the guy with no wing in front of Daly (the black car in the image above).

Suranovich had lost his wing and was basically weaving all over the place on entry in to corners. They came out of the tunnel and he moved across, braked early, Daly hit the back of him.

Will Buxton ‏@willbuxton
We may not see Suranovich for a while. I have it on impeccable authority that post race he flipped off the chief steward. No st.

and in reply

Conor Daly ‏@ConorDaly22
@willbuxton I saw him. He walked right by me when I was leaving the paddock lol. His team guy said he got thrown out.

It's no different at many circuits, including many UK circuits, in fact there are UK posts that have less fencing in front of them than the post shown. If you move marshals back they can't observe, flag and access the track quickly plus, (although perhaps less of an issue for F1), the further back flaggies are the more difficult it is for them to be seen by the drivers.

I'm not sure what you're objection is MonkeyHanger? Have a look at the rest of the coverage of the race, there are marshals in significantly more exposed places!

The Marshal has nowhere to go. If that car had hit the fence a few metres further down the scaffold would have been knocked over. Putting people in exposed positions is one thing, not giving them an escape route is something else.

You should see some of the older posts at Macau which had ropes over the edge of a effectively sheer drop!

It's pretty difficult to outrun an F1 car or indeed any race car coming towards you, it can be done on occasion but it's not an entirely effective avoidance technique.

Lots of marshals posts are elevated platforms, it's really not unusual and arguably an elevated post is at less risk of an impact from a race car than one down at ground level.

Do you marshal at all?
