We are driving down to Grimaud, leaving on Thursday and staying near Troyes and near Montpelier on Friday. Are there any top tips for a good lunch spot somewhere between the two? I don't mind a bit of a detour off the motorway

If you are carrying on past Beaune I would recommend the Hostellerie Levernois (Hotel with restaurants).
It is only five minutes from the Beaune junction of the Autoroute, quietly situated, no parking hassles and the food is very nice.
They do some excellent Burgundies by the glass!.
See Levernois.com, and you are probably best in Bistro du Bord de Leau for Lunch.

Alan, many thanks for the response. It looks fantastic from the website and would allow a casual start in the morning prior to a light lunch, with maybe a smallish glass of white, prior to a three hour sedatish drive South.
I will let you know if re-packing of hair driers and make- up etc allow time to try it out!

Alan, we got back yesterday after a wonderful week near Grimaud. We stopped off at the Chateau de Rochegude for the night after our lunch in Beaune which I can recommend if you are going that way. It is in a pretty Medieval village and has good food and wine. When I can find out to get pictures from this iPad onto the forum, which should not be too tricky, I'll stick a picture up.
The car was just fantastic; 3,000 miles over 10 days of driving in great comfort and unique style. On the way back we took to the back roads and people were waving in the small villages. Bikers giving the thumbs up was also unusual!

PS I have left my V8VR at our place there (3 weeks and counting till next trip), and am already missing it and will not now be able to attend Hever

It depends on how fast you drive! We were there by six easily and I think that we had left by two thirty but the traffic wasn't too bad. The usual fool in a Renault sitting on your tail whilst one waited for the car in front to move over encouraged some fairly enthusiastic right footage, just to see how quickly they went backwards, maybe got us there a bit faster than the speed limits might indicate.How long did it take you to get there from Beaune?

Jockman, it is a long way for you to get to the start line, let alone getting to the South of France. Can you still get a car on a plane like the good old days?

I used to drive to Marbella quite a bit, but now I prefer to leave a car in Bilbao and fly with Vueling.
Yeah it's fairly pricey, but I was spending a fair bit in fuel in the ML since it has a 5.5 V8 I used to drive to Marbella quite a bit, but now I prefer to leave a car in Bilbao and fly with Vueling.
Also it's only an hour or so crossing from France to England so not much chance for rest inbetween.
Usually drive through once a year, I'll let you know when I next do
