UNIQUE 1970S PRO STOCK TEAM GATHERING AT DRAGSTALGIA

In the early 1970’s a handful of American Super Stock & Pro Stock cars were imported into the UK. Gary Goggin was already trouncing the opposition with his blue Corvette in Top Street but in 1972 Tony Dickson debuted his new car, a genuine U.S. built Super Stock 1967 Camaro, 'Money Hungry', which had rolled off the boat just a few days earlier. 1973 at the BDRHRA‘s April season opener at SPR saw the first ever Pro Stock Eliminator in the UK – in truth a mix of Pro Stock and Super Stock cars with some European hi-brids at first like Tender Trap and the Music Machine. The class lasted until the end of 1976 when small fields and high costs forced it to be merged with the Super Street class under the new banner of Top Modified.

Why are we telling you this? Well, if you are visiting Dragstalgia on July 15th this year then don’t forget your autograph book or copy of Crazy Horses. The reason, the British Drag Racing Hall Of Fame has managed to locate a majority of these early pioneers of Pro Stock racing who will be in attendance for the Sunday only at Santa Pod Raceway. The list so far is;

Gary Goggin, Kevin Pilling, Colin Mullan, John Dickson, Sam Connell, Peter Bennett, Peter Crane and Barry George This list keeps growing and who knows who will be turning up on the day. It will be the first time some of these pioneers have met up since the 1970s. If you know where other European Pro Stock drivers or team members are these days then contact Stu Bradbury of the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame britishDRHOF@aol.com. If you know where some of the cars are even more so. And what about Gunne Back? Does anyone know where he is these days?

Don’t miss out, it could be your only chance to meet these stars of the past and collect their autograph or have a chin wag.

Despite many hopes, my every visit to SPR seemed to coincide with the "heavies" being outlawed for 1 reason or another, when I didnt go, they did....... fate can be so cruel
