Yesterday i went and test drove an astra coupe turbo, up to that point i was certain it would be my next car to finally scratch that turbo itch ,within the contraints of my finance free budget.

So after 30mins of giving it death ,the initial midrange turbo rush was nice but i couldnt feel excited about it .There was literally no point reving past say 5500rpm it just went flat as a pancake like iron board flat.
Sure it was a nice steer ,had a well damped ride and excellent seats .The lack of noise ,unwillingness to rev past 5500rpm and the fact the speedo seemingly didnt move as fast as the tsport (well confused there) has put me right of getting a standard coupe turbo.

After the test drive i gave the tsport death allday long ,even had a play with a corsa vxr which had to be standard for me to keep on him.

so now im back to square one ,revs win but i cant see the value in going down the civic type r route.

o ye cool story bro etc

Surely you could get something properly turbocharged(i.e. japanese) within your budget?

What about an MR2 Turbo or an S14 200sx?

A quick scan suggests the two cars make very similar power, although the turbo is quoted as quicker to 60.

OP, stop looking at websites like "hunksincassocks.com" and "altarwinetales.com" or you will go blind.

A Rev 3 MR2 Turbo is a good shout. The throttle is very sharp for a turbo car, and in standard tune the feed of power from the turbo is very linear and progressive, and pull strongly with just a slight dip above the redline (whereas previous MR2 Turbos were known to run out of puff much sooner).

I love turbo cars, I think the main problem is that the Astra Coupe was never much good anyway!

yes

My old STi was great up to 7K RPM... Go have a drive in one, it will make the Astra thing you are looking at seem like a childs toy.

Yup, a Rev3+ MR2 turbo will tick all the right boxes, unless you need the extra seats.

Coincidentally, I am about to put my Rev5 up for sale wink

My Fiat Coupe 20VT pulled hard all the way to the limiter, unlike my Rev 2 MR2 Turbo which was just like the Astra; flat as a fart above about 5500 RPM.

My impreza revs fine to 7k. I don't think the z20let in the astra is a particulary revvy engine. Even my focus st was still ok revving past 6.5k.

My Impreza (P1) will pull all the way to 8,000+ RPM so maybe try an STI.

Thanks for all the verdicts lads/ladettes/ladyboys :P

ok lets give you all some feedback

mr2 : im powerfully built ,and just dont fit wheel touches my knee iv tried driving one in the past

fiat coupe : its a fiat so therefor would fall to bits right ? rolleyes

impreza of any kind : 23 yr old insurance

focus st : learned to drive in that shape focus ,that seat is so high i couldnt live with it on a daily basis ,also my mate gets 19mpg whatever he does in it.

corolla compressor : i do like ,but i know from the tsport forum you cant tune it ,its not alot faster ,and you cant get replacement parts.Might be able to get insured as its non-turbo

vtec anything :see impreza line

m3 :vanos ,brake pads ,discs ,19" tyres and insurance quotes of 4500

so there you go im screwed .
