What Rear Derailleur?

Current derailleur is a Shimano Deore XT Shadow. Only 2 months old (although a fair bit of abuse - 600 ish miles, including trips to Cwmcarn, Cannock and a race at Swinley).
However, it no longer springs back to keep tension in the chain. Can keep it in one gear and just about cope, but obviously the chain sags when the rear suspension compresses. Also, I can move into bigger cogs because this won't cause the chain to sag, just then can't move back into a smaller cog afterwards.
Anyone come across this before? I assume I'll need a new derailleur but don't want to use another Shadow if they have a bad reputation.
Will something like a SRAM X9 work with Shimano shifters or would they need replacing too? Gear cables are routed through the down tube so don't wanna have to replace those as you need to remove the bottom bracket to route the cables apparently!

think most of the sram stuff was a direct ratio, whereas shimano has a 2:1 or something, anyway, last time i looked you needed to match shifters and mechs.
2 months doesn't seem a lot to me, irrespective of what you said you've done. do shimano still do the heavier duty stuff? saint? would that be more suited to your needs?

Take it off the bike, drown it in GT85 (WD40) and move it back and forth by hand until it frees up. Clean it off, oil it with chain lube, and it should be fine. Lube the pivots regularly to stop it happening again.
If you ave to replace it, XT shadow is pretty decent kit so I would replace it with the same, or SLX if you want something good but cheaper. SRAM stuff isn't compatible unless you change the shifter as well (unless you go for their really cheap range...)

Left it overnight and it had seized again. LBS told me it was just dirty and needed a clean so they failed to spot the actual problem.
Getting another LBS to have a look but if they can't figure out the problem, or just tell me it's f

The Shimano website has a brilliant tech docs section so you could easily strip it and rebuild it youself, it depends what cleaning solution you are using, lube alone probably wont shift whatever is on there.

I remeber guys saying the SRAM has a different ratio of pull to Shimano, not sure on the new stuff though.

Yes, exactly. However, you can run a SRAM shifter with a shimano front mech (X7 and XT in my case) and it appears to work.Gassing Station | Pedal Powered | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
