here's the deal, i'm starting teacher training in september and will have a wee bit more cash to fund a car (aka fuel and servicing!) but i need something fairly respectable to park in the staff car park .....

obviously i'm after something with a bit of poke or handles a dream (either/or) and won't break the bank (aren't we all) but not a small hatch .... ive had a MK3 Golf GTI and i'm currently running a 306 DTurbo.

ive been thinking .....

Primera GT
320, 323, 328?!
VTEC Accord

not too bothered about saloons etc as i can always smash a roofrack on for my surfboard .....

any more suggestions??

Should get a fairly good condition 323 for this money. Go for a later model in factory spec

It gets called the last hot hatch of its type sometimes, presumably meaning the subsequent models are much more refined, but personally i'd welcome the more intense driving experience.

It wont be sluggish for sure, and from what i know from the UK market 1500 quid should net you a decent one. As for maintenance, the only real niggles i know are the 2.0 engine, which needs its cambelt done timely, and it tends to respond very badly (as in, need a rebuild) to oil level going below minimum. Not too sure about rust on these models.

A4 2.8 30v Quattro? Just got myself an Avant and love it - personally think the B5 shape still looks great.

What is wrong with having a hatchback and being a teacher? Are you simply afraid of being judged by your colleagues as immature?

When I was in school the most memorable/best teachers were the non conformists the ones who had the more interesting cars and didn't wear a plain white shirt and have the same sandwiches every day of the week. These teachers all drove cars like mk1/2 Golf GTIs/Vr6, Rs Turbos, Astra GTEs, Minis (proper ones)

Bugger respectable, buy a 306 Rallye and then spend the new few months doing the suspension, de-cat and exhaust, buckets and stripping it out. Be the teacher with the cool track day car not with the dull BMW.
