Find me a car challenge.
Discussion
Ok I am looking for a bit of a summer toy. Hopefully to be jointly owned between me and my dad and kept in his garage except when i am using it. Insurable on a classic type policy would be handy too!
Criteria - up to 2k max, convertible, reasonable running costs, reasonable insurance, 30 mpg ish min, fairly sporty drive and within 40 miles of DH8 postcode (co durham).
I know the usual suspects mx5, mgtf (had both before and mr2 and i wouldnt rule any of these out, but i a seeking some PH inspiration here!
I have been looking on ebay/autotrader and have some possibles but maybe the PH world might be aware of something Im not!

Yes and this is probably the favourite.
Looking for alternatives and suggestions of specific cars.
Alternatives, well there are loads. If it's purely for fun and a weekender, then I think the MX-5 is a little too "normal" and everyday. Think I'd be looking at kits or classics.Looking for alternatives and suggestions of specific cars.
As for specific cars - don't be so f'ing lazy

look yourself. Anyone posting a potential car will have to do the exact same thing you could do yourself.
Oh forgot to add, has to be reasonably easy to get in and out of, dad has had 2 hip replacements and found getting in/out of my old vx220 nearly impossible. As for specific cars - don't be so f'ing lazy

I was aksing for specific cars in case anyone may have been aware of a car for sale from as source I am not aware of. I have the energy to check ebay etc.

Not eveyone will like this as an idea. But if getting and out is important and you still want it to be fun, then maybe consider a 4x4.
£2k should just about get you into a YJ Wrangler with a bit of luck, albeit a 2.5 rather then the 4.0 litre, the 4.0 litre is actually quite rapid, sound lovely and with a removable roof they can be as much fun as a sports car to drive, although very much a different kind of drive. But they will be ever so easy to get in/out of and look great.
£2k would also get you a Series Land Rover, less able than the Jeep and more agricultural. But heaps of charm.

So you read the criteria- convertible, reasonable running costs, reasonable insurance, 30 mpg ish min, fairly sporty drive £2k should just about get you into a YJ Wrangler with a bit of luck, albeit a 2.5 rather then the 4.0 litre, the 4.0 litre is actually quite rapid, sound lovely and with a removable roof they can be as much fun as a sports car to drive, although very much a different kind of drive. And came up with something completely different. Just to be 'original' presumably.
How about this-

Not too far from you, and a bargain at £1,600

No if you read I said it'd be about getting in and out easily, to which the OP has said a VX220 type of access would be a no.And came up with something completely different. Just to be 'original' presumably.
However if you must:
-convertible - yes
-reasonable running costs - yes
-reasonable insurance - yes
-30mpg - no, although a Tdi LR is almost yes and LPG is an option on petrol. However a little common sense would suggest that a "summer toy" as the OP says, is likely to be doing very low annual mileage. Which means the reality of high vs low mpg might only be a few quids difference a month to fuel
-sporty - well in the case of the Wrangler (if it has the 4.0) then yes. 8.8 sec to 60mph, nippy and chuckable. However I did (rather clearly) state in my post that they are fun, but a different kind of fun with the primary focus for the suggestion on EASY ACCESS in and out of the vehicle....

Some stuff
Easy access doesn't necessitate an off-roader! The Wrangler might be chuckable, but the handling and/or fun factor is hardly going to compare with conventional convertibles is it?
Sporty and convertible are not words I would use to describe any of your suggestions

I don't know to be honest, but they do seem highly regarded from what I've heardhow do they drive?

Who said it does? I said an 'idea' so as to give the op a few alternative ideas. Is that such a difficult thing for you to grasp??

In truth I'd say the Wrangler with the 4.0 in is a better drive than the floppy Alfa you posted.Sporty and convertible are not words I would use to describe any of your suggestions

Did I just read the words Wrangler and chuckable in the same sentence? 300 BHP you are special.
Looking at your profile, have you actually driven one or any comparable 4x4?And yes chuckable, I entered the Wrangler bigger brother (Cherokee) into a motoring event the other year. It was chuckable enough to put up better stage times than a couple of the MX-5's also competing and fast enough to run about middle of the table.
