Yes that what happened when i came back from the growl today, close to home came of the kingsbury island gave it a little and it went bang loads of missfire(around 4500rpm when it happened) and rattle rattle, no loss of oil pressure loads of rattling comming from the plemum area, limped back home at 1000 rpm phew made it. Anyone got any ideas, i will take off the rocker covers tomorow and have a look, Oh well no growl for me tommorow.

i never made it to the growl, i was stuck in the garage changing my camshaft!!!!

Hope it nothing serious or costly, but thats the best thing about the RV8 it doesnt cost too much to repair.

sounds like the rockers have detached.

if so, the valves may be bent, but SHOULD be ok. springs should hold them safe out of the way.

hope its not too bad.

Thanks to all who have previously replied, here is the story so far, took the plenum chamber off hmm its of a rover sd1 and one of the trumpets had come out, however this had been out for a long time because it has worn and elongated the hole (looks like a bit of fancey tig welding here?)also took the rocker ass off no bent push rods, the valves seem ok, going to take the inlet manifold off now and pull the buckets out and see if i can see if the cam is worn? the only thing i can assume at this moment is that or is there a oil seal to the hydraulic buckets mabey it has split and caused the knoking noise

check to see if all the pads are on the rockers, there has been stories of them becoming detached.

Check followers dont push down too easy cos this can give a lot of slack if pressure is not retained.

You may be able to get a s/hand trumpet base from ACT or V8D if they have one from a plenum swap?

I have just got mine running after putting in a new cam (slight ticking noise) and its running like a dog below 3000 rpm so even a cam swap is not straight forward!!!!

Well here is the result the camshaft is worn out, the 1st few lobes are dry and colourd (heat) all of the hyd followers are slightly dished, think the oil pump may be suspect although no previous low oil pressure readings cold on tickover used to be 50psi, warm was 25psi, and when hot full thrash would be no more than 60psi, will be looking for a camkit now any help would be appreciated also heads coming off for big valve conversion if it has not allready been done, and a good priced plenum with air flow meter, please email me any info,
Thanks steve.....

Took the cam out tonight 3 lobes were well worn out nearly round in fact, best of it that it still ran quite good before it happened so be warned mine had covered a genuine 88000 miles run on mobile 1 with full service history just my luck eh?

I recomend the MC2 cam and stage 3 heads from V8 Dev, VV similar set up to Guillotine he has the mythical 404-Hydraulic cam of which the MC2 is a very mildly softer version. and i dont have all the other nic toys he has, and my grif is just a TAD quieter.

P.S Guillotine... when you when under that motorway bridge with MR Nuds on the way back from peninsula open day, its the only time when I have seen a car louder that duncans SEAC. he was reported to say at the Beer Stop.. that griffs loud

OH NO took off rh side head tonight (going to cylinder place tomorow)and FUhells bells piston number 5 has broke apparantly these cowinside with the worn out cam weakest point of piston were the valve cuttaway is part of the piston ring has hammered and impregnated itself to the piston and battered the cylinder face, not the valves! and combustion chamber, there is some luck in it though it has very slightly scored the bore this will hone out (job for my snapon drill thingy with fine stone of course plenty of lubrication)however i will have to tig the holes up in the head face and have them skimed got my dial guage on the piston blimey those rods are good not bent.
Has eny one got a spare piston !!!!!

UPDATE
off to tvr power tomorow to pick up my new piston has to be ballanced (get the weight right)decided to hone bores and have new piston rings and also bigend bearings, the original are fine though but whilst their may as well change, camshaft came today piper 285 got new timing chain and pulley, also ordered a new trumpet base with 45mm short trumpets and whilst the head is being big valved i decided to have adjustable push rods and some high reving hyd lifters, may as well put new engine mountings in what else is gonna empty my wallet further

Why do you need adjustable pushrods with hydraulic lifters?

this will allow correct adjustment to ensure that pre-load is the same due to having new valves fitted one cannot asume that all the valves will be all the same level

Bloody hell Steve, if you've gone this far you may as well put that T5 box in as well

By the way was she pinking just before the failure, as it sound very similar to a failure I had on my old 4.3BV

Basically pinking like mad, me being a numpty thought it'd be ok, end result 4 broken pistons and 1 knackered cylinder head.

Andy.

No pinking just a small explosion on the up change at max revs, apparantly about 3 years ago in the service history there was a report of low compression on the cylinder which the piston broke, thought it may have been done, oh well car came cheap anyway

Latest up date

at last all of the parts are here now the 45mm trumpets and modified carrier came the other day, the high rev followers came today with the adjustable push rods, and tomorow i am off to fetch the modified heads these have been de-coked polished and cc'd the big valves are turfrided and set in at 3 angle seat, the heads had to be skimed by 5 tho, because of a little dammage on the one pot.
I think i am going to hane some time off next week to fit it all together
