I'm really finding that early Boxsters are calling to me
just now - I mean how cheap can they get??!

The cheapest option would mean probably an early 2.5 - coming in at under 4K these days, I just wondered what owners/drivers think of them. Are they troublesome? Too slow? - or actually a sweet driving basic sports car that still delivers enjoyment in spades...

My 98 2.5 which kicked off the Povert Pork thread has been great, buy carefully, look for a well looked after one, cheapest may not be best but we aren't talking about a huge spread in the prices so you can do well .....

Things to look for, usual really, leaks, poor history, skipped maintenence, cheap and nasty tyres, if its a really early one check the hood over carefully and the rear window for cracking, a good one seems a real steal at the moment and in the real world for me and my 25 mile mmainly B road commute its quick enough, just wind it up and drive it in the 3500 - 4500 RPM sweet spot ....

I think the Boxster is a decent basic sports car. I've only had my S for nearly 3 months but been well pleased so far. Few driver aids and plenty of pace to get you into and out of trouble on the road. Now with a new exhaust it sounds like a TVR but with hopefully more reliability lol. If anything on 18s it is a little over tyred but the rest of the package and value you can hardly fault.

Stevie - If you are a look for a fun, affordable, reliable sports car, then I would strongly recommend at 986 Boxster

I currnetly have a 986 3.2 S and my misses has a 986 2.7. And i've previously owned the 2.5! So I know a little about them.

The 2.5 isn't overly fast, especially by today's standards, but the handling is excellent. Great driving position, very well balanced, excellent suspension makes it a blast around the A and B roads. If you can stretch to the 2.7 then you will be rewarded with a bit more power and more refined engine, especially at motorway cruising speed.

Prices are excellent right now and there is plenty of choice. Echo early comments on things to look out for. I'd also insist on a full service history with either main dealer or porsche specialists. A a file full of invoices is always a bonus to see where money has been spent. If it hasn't been a well loved car, walk away!

Otherwise enjoy a great summer! I'm confident you will love it.
