I've sold the OHs car but want to put the plate on retention - if I wobble off down to Manchester DVLA with all the relevant docs can they put it on retention and issue the original plate back to the car there and then? I know they will transfer plates there and then. (not fussed that I won't get a V5 straight away as the car has been sold to a mate so he won't be fussed waiting).

Cheers all.

They wont transfer the plates there and then or re-issue a new reg there and then. It will take 7-10working days typically and the documentation for the plate transfer will be sent out to you in the post along with new tax discs for both vehicles. You will then have new V5's shortly after.

Is it the cars orginal reg or your OH's Private plate?

The advantage of going to the DVLA office is that your paperwork will be checked before you leave - nothing more annoying than having it all sent back to you to correct a stupid oversight.

Usually it is less then that, normally around 5 days.

Are you sure? Last time I transferred a plate from one car to another I walked in and out within ten minutes and had two new tax discs, stamped MOTs to show the change and some papers so I could get new plates made. Only thing I had to wait for was the V5.

Our local office will do a change from retention certificate over the counter.

Everything else is as mentioned, 7-10 working days.
