So in two weeks time the Cayenne is booked in for a major service and as soon as it is complete it is going up for sale. (I would keep it but I get a Countryman SD from work and this is therefore an opportunity to save towards the 911 that the Cayenne should have been, until the 2 sprogs arrived.)
Anyway all of a sudden the rear parking sensors have thrown a strop and the visual scale turns the two red blocks both right and left of the visual scale on as well as the audible tone on as if the car is really close to something when in reverse.
The front senors are fine and it appears to be an intermittent thing with the rear, but I don't want it to go up for sale without being sorted. (Not really fair on the next owner.)
Whilst if need be I will get the OPC to investigate, and I hope that it is only a loose connection I just wondered if anyone else has had a similar issue and what was wrong.
Cheers, Stu.

My front left one is also playing up, has become very sensitive. Could be a virus we've picked up ?

My Touareg had a similar problem with the front sensors. It used to turn on the two outside red lights within the dash readout which tell you that there's a fault. It turned out to be a faulty sensor which had split behind the bumper and was letting in water causing a short. Cost about £50 for the sensor and about the same for labour IIRC.

Sensors can cause problems on cayennes. The two outer rear ones are most common to fail as I think it has something to d with the heat from exhaust tips. Around £70 fort the sensor amd 15 mins to fit if outer ones.

Diagnostic test will show the stores fault.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I am really hoping that it is just a loose connection but cann't help feeling that it will need a new sensor or two.

Whilst I cann't say that I particularly want to fork out the cash the main reason that I was hoping for a loose connection is that I believe that if a sensor does need replacing whilst the OPC may have them in stock they would then need to paint dry and then fit them, and that ain't going to happen in the one day, and with the garage over an hour and about 2million quid in super unleaded away I am still praying for the loose connection especially as it appears to be intermittent.

Anyway I guess that when I take her to the doctor in a few weeks we will see what the prognoses is. Hopefully just that 24hr virus!

Cheers Stu.

my experience with parking sensors on my Discovery - get someone else to sit in the car and put it into reverse - put your thumb on each sensor in turn - you should feel it clicking. If not it's dead. Repeat for the front, in a forward gear. This will tell you how many sensors you need. Not easy to fit I assume.

That works but you can't always feel them - if you put your ear very close you will hear a "tick tick tick..." - any that are silent aren't working, if none are silent then listen for one with a weaker sound to the others.

Of course this only works if the fault is present at the time but as Mike says a Porsche tester will show the faults stored.

Looks like I'll be on my hands and knees praying on the weekend and whilst I'm there I may as well start touching up the rear bumper feeling for the sensors working or listening for dolphin noises. I never knew Porsche ownership would be quit so interactive!
Seriously though, thanks all for the responses all v helpful.
I will let you know how I get on.
Stu.

Ok, so been on my hands and knees today as promised.

When I was reversing out of the garage today to check on the senors all seems fine and they are detecting what they should detect.

Stick the thing in reverse but leave in park (put the wife in drivers seat with foot on brake, just in case) and start to listen fo morse code signals. It would appear that most seem to be ticking away however the end one on the drivers side isn't trying to contact any one (although from within it appears to be picking up fine, both audibly and visually), and the next one along can' t make it's mind up if it wants to tick or not.

Therefore this would seem to support the theory of issues surrounding the sensors by the exhaust being vulnerable (and me too with the amount of wonderful used super unleaded that I breathed in), but is also proving to be a pain in the arse as it is obviously an intermittent problem.

Due to unforeseen circumstances I have had to change the service date to July 2nd, so we will see what happens in the interim, and whether OPC Cardiff get the opportunity to charge me £5million (plus VAT) per hour to investigate.

Bump.

My Cayenne has suffered the same problem yesterday.

Are these covered under Porsche Warranty?

If they are not, im off to my local guys to find the issue with the sensors.

Will call the OPC to find out there call on it as well.

If they're anything like mine, they might just need a little bit of time to dry out. I'm beginning to learn that Cayenne's have the odd moment here and there on the electrics front but seem to sort themselves. Which is nice.

Mine referenced above was found to be due to me sticking on the front numberplate with insufficient double sided stickey tape, the slight movement was picked up by the sensors.

Been jet washing your car by chance? Those sensors are prone to water ingress.

Had one go on my 'Bus' and had to swap it out. Turned out the old sensor was full of water.

Glad I found this thread.

My sensor was going off on the right hand side. The error code software wasnt showing any fault. I ordered a new one off eBay, by which time both sides were going off.

It turned out to be the front number plate coming away from the sticky pads!

A couple of screws has cured it.
