Question for you ornithologists out there!
Discussion
Saw a bird (of the feathered variety or this question would have been on the Lounge
) in the garden that I can't identify. I have tried to use this
http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdidentifier/for...
to no avail.
It was about the size of a fat house sparrow, its body colour was a mustardy colour with a black bar either side of its head above its eyes. Its beak was kind of chaffinchy quite stout and short. It was sat on a bent over dandelion stalk eating the seeds. Was quite wary of being there, stripped some seed then looked up, rinse and repeat. Didn't see it for very long. We are in semi-rural north Notts if that gives any clues.
So I wondered if you could help sate my curiosity as I have never seen one like it before.

Yellowhammer perhaps: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowhammer
I would go with Siskin as it's a seed eater however, not at this time of year
Possibly a greenfinch which has quite a lot of yellow on it despite it's name
Rather than the RSPB site ( a useful site in the main) just google Greenfinch in their images
I could be wrong but warblers are insect-eaters otherwise yes to a wood warbler and it's beak is more like a dunnock and robin and not a finch's seed-beak
My only hesitation re the finch is the lack of eyebar on them

From the replies, the structure of the beak and the shape of the bird seems to make it some sort of finch. It may have just been a greenfinch with crazy punk markings!
I have looked at pics of the others and this seems to be the closest. Still puzzled by the colouring though. Maybe it is an escapee from someone's bird collection and isn't native - who knows, not me that's for sure!
Thanks for the help guys, I will keep an eye out for it and see if I can get a pic.
