Insurance up for renewal in a few weeks.

My current insurer, Admiral, has predictably raised the premium to £395.

Received an insurance renewal reminder email via confused.com today where the lowest quote they come up with is £245 from, you guessed it, Admiral.

I understand how this game works - attract new customers via cheap quotes then raise the premium at renewal - but wondered if anyone has experience of a similar scenario with Admiral and successfully had their renewal quote reduced to the one quoted by confused.com or similar.

I've been with Admiral since passing my test in 2004 (they've always been cheapest), and every renewal the price is higher than a "new" quote I get from a comparison site. Every year I phone up the renewal department and tell them about the new quote, which they price match without a hint of embarassment about their attempt to rip me off. The bastids.

Thanks codswallop.

I moved to Admiral after almost a decade with Flux so not familiar with how 'negotiation friendly' they are.

Will be calling them this week and will see what they say.

To add insult to injury the group that own Admiral also own confused.com

So they have even happily compared themselves to the market and agreed that their renewal is an attempt to rip you off.

I priced matched an online quote from Elephant with my renewal quote from Admiral (same company), they were happy to do it and it sounded like it happened a lot.

I go through this with Admiral every year. On the upside, the Welsh call centre girls always sound really hot. Go wild.

Insurance for my Aprilia RSV was about £260 last year through MCE, with zero NCB (started a new policy as I kept my old bike). This year, with 1 years NCB, no claims, no changes to location or named drivers etc. it went up to £460. Rang them up and they managed to get it down to £440 and assured me it was most unlikely I'd get it for less due to premium increases across the board. 10 minutes spent online and it's down to £240 for the same fully comp cover, same excess, breakdown cover, European cover etc. From other peoples experiences with MCE it seems I am well rid of them.

They could sell me anything with their accents!

Shame their claims department aren't as helpful from what I've found.

Play them at their own game, say another insurer has beaten them by XX (keep it realistic say 5%) , and they'll price match it if you have been with them a few years. They wont ask to see a written quote etc.

If you're bothered, ring up elephant/bell and say admiral were cheaper, they match it and you get the same policy for cheaper, under a different name.

Looking for insurance for the MG1600 a few years ago, I visited a comparison site (latterly featuring Sergei being unsympathetic wink ) and got very competitive quotes from a company who passes customer & claims data "out of the EU"...

My outgoing insurers could meet the "Ins Co with the admin outside EU" quote, as long as I didn't need business cover... Beating the broker named after "the county town of Lancashire" down to include business cover for the same price as the ex-EU drones gave me as much pleasure as having one of my cats put to sleep frown , but as I have the same reputation as Thrush (persistent and a pain in the nether regions wink ) I did it nonetheless smile ...

For the sake of £40 - or 25% - I am obviously cheap wink . Especially as they were originally - a year before - utterly unable to provide suitable proof of insurance for me to register said MG1600 (which is LHD, originally sold in the GDR and was unregistered when I got me grubby mitts on it) with the DVLA until the third try. The second try meant I ended up with a letter telling "to whom it may concern" that an MGF was insured by a specific lady, which wasn't applicable for one more reason than on this thread (unless you're guessing I'm a man wink ).

Five years later, there is no-one to beat them on their quotes - still frown . But £150 with agreed valuation, fully comp with business use and a 3,000 miles p.a. limit isn't bad for a Bolton postcode smile .

I was with admiral last year and they did the same to me, I have to say they were pretty good and matched the quote I had from confused.com with no issues at all, the insurance companies can certainly lower the price at there discretion.

I've been driving about 4 years or so now and my first years insurance with Aviva was £2500, the second year they offered me a renewal of £2000, I phoned them up because I knew I could get it a lot cheaper, they instantly gave me an updated price of £1300!! which I thought was very cheeky.... I didnt end up using them though tongue out(got it for £1200 with RAC biglaugh)

I'd give Aviva a go.. I know they're not on comparison sites but was pleasantly surprised to stick my details into their site and get a much cheaper quote than anywhere else. And you can update your policy completely online whenever you want (change cars, drivers, etc).

If you get a good quote and want to go for it, let me know - we can both get a £25 M&S voucher under their referral scheme smile
