Clio 172 speedo stopped working?

Hi there, my brother in law has just bought a clio 172 and the speedo has stopped working....what could it be? Would appreciate if someone could help.

Disconnected speedo cable?
It's french?
Does the trip meter/odometer still work?

Mine broke too, except under hard acceleration the speedo would bounce around in the top half of the range like nobodies business

I wrote it off shortly after.
