How to price my 996 "Club Sport" for sale?
Discussion
Some of you will have seen or followed my thread on my 996 build:
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
Most of the photos are missing now but I will try and re-post some this week.

When we moved to Singapore, 2 years ago, we were only going to stay 2 years hence the car was to be put into storage, ready for when I came back. However, one girlfriend left and another one came along and it now looks like we will be staying out of the UK for a while yet.
I've been paying, monthly, for the car to be stored and run (to keep the fluids circulating around the engine etc) by Autofarm and it just doesn't seem right to leave it there indefinitely.
This isn't a for sale thread as the V5 is with me in Sinagpore, the spare key is in storage in London and the storage unit is in Oxfordshire, so I'd need to come home to advertise and get the sale sorted but we would usually come home for a week or two in summer, anyway.
It would be good to have some 2nd opinions on value as I think it is time we at least thought about putting it up for sale and finding it a good home.
If you follow the thread, linked above, the car really was maintained well and has done approximately 82k (from memory) with all the work done in the last 10k, including 3 oil changes! It has only seen one trackday, despite all the trackday bits and pieces, carbon and alcantara and I've never even driven it with the GT3 steering wheel!

It owes me an awful lot from when I bought it 3 years ago but it was a toy/ hobby which I very much enjoyed and I am totally accepting of the market having gone into recession and my particular car having a reduced audience. But as '98 3.4 Carreras go; this one must be one of the most refreshed and the engine always pulled well and it was featured in 911 & Porsche World when it was 'finished'.
So - anyone any thoughts as to where to pitch the price?

It had:
- New bumpers front & rear
- Refreshed suspension including Intrax titanium adjustable dampers
- Carbon bucket seats (black and red stitch)
- Carbon front strut brace
- GT3 alcantara and red stitch gear stick and steering wheel
- Rebuilt and powder coated (yellow) brake calipers
- Refurbished and powder coated wheels
- New stainless brake lines
- Equal length exhaust manifolds
- Milltek silencers
- Rebuilt gearbox
- Clear front lights
- Red rear lights
- A host of other bits and pieces detailed in the build thread
But how to price it as there doesn't seem to be much like it for sale, anywhere!?

Thanks for that
Pretty much sums up my thoughts, exactly.
It was never bought to 'make money' but there comes a point where I might as well keep it rather than 'give it away', but I don't have a figure for that, yet.
I could put it back to standard but without being in the country, I'd have to pay someone and that probably defeats the object!

Is an interesting one to price, prob worth a chat with autofarse & see how they value it as best bet would prob be to sell it through them.
As said above will be a slim market for modded 996, unlike say an m3 where it can increase over a standard cars value by a good margin, value wise what would a stock example be worth? 10k 12k ?
I'd see it at that level but with a smaller audience.
Worth an email to a few specialists for Their views- Henry, Rsj, jsm, finlay gorham, they wouldn't pay much to buy & resale on but may have better idea what you could get private sale.
If you had gone the rebuilt & more grunt engine route that IMHO would have made it a good deal more desireable, Gt3 pace but at under half the price for even a scruffy high miler Gt3 would have had appeal to more I feel.

Dumb question Dom, but if you are in Singapore, is it possible to import it as a personal effect (avoiding import duties)?
IIRC, you could sell it for a hell of a lot more there. Just a thought.
No idea on price, but it looks rather tasty!
I live in Singapore for most of the time, that idea is a non starter, you can't import vehicles over three years old, and if the car is under three years old, firstly you need a Certificate of Entitlement (license to register a car) which is currently around 45K pounds and then it would be subject to duty at 150% it's open market value. I have spent 5 years trying to find a loophole and the government have all angles covered. IIRC, you could sell it for a hell of a lot more there. Just a thought.

G'day Dom,
sorry to see you have decided to sell your car. If I were in your position I would advertise the car for sale aimed at a track enthusiast who recognises the value of the suspension, rebuilt gearbox and exhaust tweaks. You will not get your money back of course but since the car is in storage you can probably afford to wait.
As your car and my car are the only two in the UK that run Intrax 1K2 suspension that I am aware of, it is a bit of an unknown quantity to most but it is worth every penny. I forget whether your car is an LSD car but if so don't forget to mention that.
GLWS.
Good luck with the new future.

I'd love to have it here but it is just so, so, so expensive! IIRC, you could sell it for a hell of a lot more there. Just a thought.

Thanks for that, I agree with all of it. I think a rebuilt engine would have it snapped up but it really would have put me in good GT3 territory at the time, financially. I guess the car owes me what a ropey GT3 would have cost, but it's in better condition. As above, I reckon that's true. But if someone bought the car off me now and did the AF 3.7 conversion, it would end up a lot cheaper than a GT3 as it's depreciated so heavily.matc said:
Weidly I was only thinking about this car yesterday, I even had a search for the original thread as I wondered how you were getting on with it!
Good luck with the sale, be interested to see what you decide on re: the price.
Thanks buddy, will update this as we go!Good luck with the sale, be interested to see what you decide on re: the price.

Good to hear from you, matey! It does have the LSD! I guess you are one of the other few who have a highly modified 996 - are you keeping yours a while yet? It has been worth every penny! If I was home, I'd just keep it as a toy as it owes me so much, it is a pain to have to sell it, to be honest. But, what's the point of paying for it, without using it, forever? sorry to see you have decided to sell your car. I'm not sure what I'm more sad about, you selling this car or you not moving home?
Can you please do us all a favour and go home to London instead? Use the porker as your daily smoker and your F599 for the weekend jaunts down to your bolt hole in Italy?
Marky boy... I'm thinking F458 station car if we come home and mansion on Como I'm not sure what I'm more sad about, you selling this car or you not moving home?

Still no closer to knowing where to pitch it. It would probably cost 10k for a base car with similar miles then maybe close to that again to get it to this condition... So, something in between feels reasonable but it's a limited market!

Rather than see it as a drain on resources, could you not turn it in to an income generator by hiring out? Of course there would be challenges, but an option nonetheless. Or raffle it? Or donate to your favourite charity to raffle/sell and do some good for the world? Good luck!
Hi Rog, hiring it out might be an idea but that would be difficult to organise from this distance, with the time difference and someone would still need to be paid to look after it. Insurance may be difficult then as well. I guess it might be a good car for someone looking to hire it out on trackdays though i.e. make a business out of it?!Straight sale feels like the easiest thing to do and since Mrs9 just spent $600 on a haircut (she better look even more stunning) I think I would quite like the money!
The charity thing stole many of my beer tokens earlier this year, to the tune of about $15k (I won my place in the charity auction): http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
So, as nice an idea as it sounds, with Mrs9 being a lady of leisure, I think we did our charity bit for 2012 and better try and put some cash in the bank as I am not massively confident of wanting to stay in my current job and may need some extra time-off buffer!
So, anyone else anymore ideas? Pitch it somewhere in the 13k to 16k range? Does that seem reasonable/ fair/ ridiculous? I guess we are not in a hurry to sell and if we came home, I would keep it as a toy, but it does feel a bit of a burden at the moment...

Ah mate, that's a lovely car to sell cheap. I would either let a friend with a drive/garage keep it until you get back, or sell the parts indvidually through a dealer/friend.
Glad things are going well, you still in touch with Mark G?
Hi Cal, hope you are well, matey.Glad things are going well, you still in touch with Mark G?
I really don't have any friends with garages, my Dad has moved to Tenerife and my Mum's garage is full of my step Dad's sailing stuff. Though they said they would have it on the drive and sell it if I needed them to give me a hand.
I just don't have the time to strip it and put it back to mostly standard, to be honest. I'd have to use my vacation allowance to do it and in a way, that is expensive. It may not be 'better' to sell as-is but it is much easier and ease/ time is money with me being 8k miles away!
Things are going pretty well, thank you
However, we did want to move home this year (Rachael can't get a visa without us being married, effectively) or move to the States (again, need to be married for me to get a visa as I have been living outside the UK) so things aren't necessarily going to plan!If anyone has a job for an attractive Energy/ Oil broker (that's Rach, not me) in London, let me know!
Still in touch and hanging with Mr G, regulalry! I think he was looking forward to getting home this year but finds himself in much the same predicament as I do!

Maybe time to put it on eBay or at least put it in the classified? Although hard to price, £12-15k I think seems fair.
I'm going to be in London in a couple of weeks time, if you need someone to warm the fluids you know where I am ;-)
Not sure how I missed this, matey!Maybe time to put it on eBay or at least put it in the classified? Although hard to price, £12-15k I think seems fair.

The move to Houston is definitely on now, so I think eBay may be the best route!?
Mikey had offered to warm the fluids and I told him not to let you near it

I guess the market will decide what it is worth, at the end of the day but hopefully it won't be too much of an un-lubed shafting!

If it goes the ebay route make sure you post a link.
Will do matc!
I'm not sure when it will be as we have tons of things to do to organise getting to Houston from Singapore, via London but it might as well be 'the sooner, the better' if someone will 'manage' the sale for me. Or I can just sort it when we come back mid-August.
We have cats to ship in the meantime! I think they have cost me more than that car and one of them is ginger... I despair

Looks like you finally got around to selling it?

Good luck mate, although sorry to see you leaving Porsche ownership and Singapore in one big bang.
