Don't worry not planning on it.
It's just that me and the missis were watching a film last night suicidal accountant hose pipe in exhaust rag in window you know the thing. We then discussed the possibilities of being able to do it with modern cars and all there fancy anti emissions controls etc.Would it be at all possible these days?

I doubt it. You'd vomit from the fumes first imo.

Sounds like the opening scenes of The Client, only he was an attorney rather than an accountant.

Yes, it would still work.
It basically means there’s more smoke then ‘air’ in the car so you suffocate.

Older car exhausts gave off carbon monoxide which meant you fell asleep and never woke up, catalytic converters put a stop to that. I guess you could do the same thing now, but it would take much longer and probably be less relaxing.

Previously it was carbon monoxide that got you, you drifted off into a mellow sleep.

Now your stuck, slowly suffocating as your 320D gets into it's 3rd day of idling

The client, good film!

Of course, it's still carbon dioxide coming out of the tail pipe.

I know of a guy who topped himself this way, hosepipe through the window of his Nissan Micra.

Presumably the CO2 will still kill you, but it will be a lot less pleasant then the sleep inducing effect of CO. From what i read your breathing reflex isnt triggered by the absence of oxygen, but the presence of CO2, which you wont be able to get rid off anymore, so you'll be hyperventilating and gasping for air in your last minutes.

Dioxide! Different effect on the body. There's stop-start to contend with too hehe

I do not think it would be easy. Theoretically possible but not easy.

Nausea would make staying in the car difficult. With Carbon Monoxide, which used to be the car exhaust killer, pre super clean engines and CAT's etc, you rapidly become paralysed and unable to move. Hence the invariable deaths.

However suffocation is a very slow process particularly when filling a car with exhaust fumes, slowly to the point of unconsciousness. It certainly is not as quick or certain a method of ensuring death as it was.

From the very few cases of failed attempts I have seen reported, I think it is no longer the preferred method it once was. Indeed I cannot remember a death by this method reported for some years. IMO that answers the question.

If you start a two-stroke strimmer in the garage it won't take too long to be overcome I'd have thought. They're not exactly renowned for low emissions, the 2-stroke.
