I've just been reading about the Ford Mustang Shelby 500 and Motor Trend's attempts to crack 200MPH in it.

What's really remarkable is that this car sell for $54,995 in the States, making the Nissan GTR look expensive!

I can remember when affordable 100+ MPH cars were virtually non-existent,but here we have a 200MPH car for about the price of a Golf!

As well as that stonking (and largely irrelevant) top speed, it also does 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, which is mighty impressive for roughly £30K and a mainstream manufacturer.

Do you think this is a trend or is it a bubble about to burst?

More than likely a yank one off. Even the Corvette isn't that cheap for that sort of performance.

There's a reason why modern Mustangs are cheap. Partly because they feel like they're made from papier mache.

Full details here - http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/coupes/1205_gu...

As far as I understand, this is a proper Ford model, not an aftermarket mod.

I'm not saying I'd want a Mustang - I've not seen the latest, but recent one (3 years ago), they were pretty low rent inside, but still, 200 MPH is a lot of tech for $55K!

Could well be one of the V10 M5s - pricey as that sounds. There are plenty of well documented ways of getting assorted ricers up to that sort of performance, but they're often not as cheap as you think. A mate has a 700bhp Supra that's probably good for the best part of 200mph, but he refuses to admit how much has been spent on it so far.

E60 M5 for £17k. Same for an E6x M6.

Can an unrestricted M5/6 do 200mph though? If not, cheapest way to do it has to be cheap Porsche 911 (996) Turbo and a DMS remap, surely? Well documented to be able to do 200mph+

E39 M5 with a rear diff swap is probably the cheapest. E60 M5 is now around £13k onwards so thats probably the easiest.

Doing 200mph is mad anywhere but on a runway as people on the road ahead could move into your lane without any idea you are coming and create a situation where you have no where to go.

Don't want to thread hijack but that reminded me of a late model Mustang I saw the day before yesterday. It was in the 'Eleanor' livery and a hot blonde girl driving.
This cemented my view that hot girls driving cool cars is very incredibly sexy.
